I am a Army veteran, former firefighter/ambulance driver-EMT. A little over a year ago as a ER Trauma Tech I responded to a ER psych patient the size of Michael Duncan Clark (Green Mile) who was punching a Psych Tech. I tried to gain control of his upper body to stop the attack, but he body slammed me on my left side which herniated my L4 -L5 Lumbar Disc. I had a failed surgery in October with the best surgeon in his field. For a year now I haven't been able to be there for my family as a father, and husband, or work at my job that I loved, I can barely walk even to get groceries. I have been told that I have no treatment options available other than pain medication which I refuse to take other than the bare minimum to keep me out of the ER. I met and spoke with a former patient who was a Artificial Lumbar Disc replacement recipient who went from being in my condition to surfing, hiking, and even running marathons.
A hospital in Germany offers this disc replacement surgery for candidates like myself, but does not accept any insurance. It is difficult for me to ask for assistance but every other option including banks have turned me down. Without this surgery I am unable to return to work and the job that I love. But more importantly I am not able to play with my children, enjoy and participate in their childhood activities or be there for my wife who has stood beside me for over 18 years. I have 3 active boys who are 15, 13, and 7. I want to get back to work but every door has been closed for me.
In total desperation we are asking for the cost of the surgery. I just want to get back to work and be there in all the ways I can be as a husband and father for his family. I would not change my actions and would do it again if it meant preventing a co-worker from being injured. Because of my intervention I was the only one who was seriously injured. We are asking for your help to offset the cost of the surgery so I can return to work, be there for my family, and regain my life as it was. Your donation will help me to fund the surgery and expenses. Our wish is to have the surgery as soon as the money is available, and my hope is that you will help me in any way that you can even if it's just sharing this with others. Thank you.
