Cultural/Volunteer Exchange

Donation protected
This Gofundme page is to fund a month and a half long cultural and volunteering exchange for Autumn Coalwell and Kailey Miller from Cape Town to Nairobi.

Our trip will begin in South Africa with a week of volunteering in the local community with hosts and nonprofits. Our focus will be on sustainability, community gardening, and poverty.
Once we complete our community service in the area, we will be joining up with our immersive overland camping tour and traveling through Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Botswana, South Africa, Zanzibar, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Along the way will get to learn about the cultures of the people we meet, correct any misconceptions we may have about these countries, and see the geography, cities, and wildlife across East and Southern Africa. No fancy lodging, we will be sleeping in netted tents to better experience these natural areas.
We’ll be ending the trip volunteering in Kenya on projects related to sustainability, community gardening, poverty, ecology and nature preservation for two weeks to a month depending on funds. We'll be setting up these specific projects closer to our departure date through a website called Workaway, which allows smaller nonprofits and individuals across the globe to post volunteering projects to travelers and exchange lodging for volunteer help. We hope to be able to support a lot of small nonprofits in South Africa and Kenya, and learn more about their projects and impact in the process.

Autumn

I’m 21 years old. As someone who grew up watching Animal Planet and the Travel Channel instead of cartoons, traveling the world has been my lifelong dream. I want to learn about the people, cultures, and wildlife of global communities.I've spent the past few years volunteering in my community through Hands On, Clackamas Dog Services, Tualatin Riverkeepers, and various smaller volunteering projects, as well as a year with AmeriCorps and over 2100 hours volunteering in communities across the country. I’ve also worked for a nonprofit called Break A Difference as a Site Leader, facilitating volunteer engagement and logistics for their 2016 and 2017 Alternative Spring Breaks.
I have experience in volunteer engagement, disaster preparedness and recovery, farming, and working with animals of all kinds.
I believe seeing more of the world will help me gain leadership skills, new perspectives, and experience that will help me to serve communities in need across the globe as well as better help my local nonprofits.

I’m 18 and volunteering is something I’m very passionate about. I volunteer with Hannah: The Pet Society and participated in the canned food drive “TOTS (Trick Or Treat So Kids Can Eat) during high school. Over the summer I had to help raise 90,000 dollars so that my high school Thespian troupe could perform in Scotland at the Festival Fringe, and it was an incredible journey. Since my first adventure, I have been itching for more, but this time I want to go somewhere my volunteer experience might be put to good use. This is the perfect opportunity for me to combine two things I love (travel and volunteering), and hopefully make a positive difference in the process.

We need to raise the funds in the next four months, by August 1st so that we can book our travel, find spots within volunteering programs, and get all of the required/suggested vaccinations for travel within these sites (typhoid, rabies, yellow fever, cholera). We hope to depart this upcoming Fall or early Winter. The total costs come to around 6000 each when including airfare, vaccinations, trip insurance, travel from Cape Town to Nairobi, and visas for the eight countries we will be traveling through. We need to raise 12,000 total between our Gofundme page and our Youcaring page. What we can't raise through this page we will be saving for through our day to day jobs and other fundraising methods, but as we pay rent and/or college tuition, every dollar counts and anything helps.

If you have the ability to donate, we would appreciate it greatly, as it would allow the three of us to get a huge amount of international and nonprofit experience, learn about countless new cultures, and continue to serve communities across the globe. We’re also willing to make you baked goods, wash cars, make art, and help out in other ways to raise money. If you can’t donate, please share with people you know who might be able to. Thank you!
