Codee Bear's Unfortunate Weekend

Donation protected
I almost had to say goodbye to my best friend of 11 years this week.

Codee Bear is my 11 year old, American Eskimo fur baby. We've been together since he was 8 weeks old, back when we lived in Florida.  Codee is an incredibly loving, loyal and sweet natured pup.  He is very active, always smiling and fortunately he has had no other health issues all of these years (other than being suspected of having Cushings disease).  Codee made the move with me and his younger brother to New York City this past January.  They both love Central Park, the dog runs and the city.

This past weekend, my worst nightmare happened.  I had a  petsitting job that required me to be away and my (new) roommate watched both Codee and his brother.   When I returned home on Monday afternoon, I noticed his water bowl was missing and Codee was acting disoriented.   As I offered him water, he drank as if he hadn't had anything to drink for days.

After a few hours, my girlfriend Jamie and I both realized something was seriously not right with Codee. We rushed him to the emergency room, only to find that he was severely dehydrated, so much so that his organs and intestines were unable to function properly.  I learned he had very limited water over the previous 3 days.

To add insult to injury, he had also eaten some things he was not supposed to. Normally, when he eats things he isn't supposed to he is able to pass them just fine. Because he was extremely dehydrated, he could not pass what he got into...  everything was stuck in his stomach.  The vet required him to stay overnight in order to get fully hydrated.  Then we would address the items in his stomach.

After two emergency room trips, a whole day of diagnostics, an endoscopy that didn't work, ultimately Codee had to have an invasive surgery last night (10/13/16).  He is still being monitored at the ASPCA, as I anxiously write this.   When I got to see my little trooper earlier today, he perked right up and accepted food and love.  They are concerned with his breathing, and he's always been a snorer, but with everything blocked in his stomach for days, they need to make sure he's okay.  It is hopeful he will come home tomorrow.

Anyone who knows me learns quickly how much of an animal advocate I am, so much so that I have devoted my life to helping and caring for animals.  I would do absolutely anything I could to care for my babies.

Unfortunately this transition has been tough on me, and the decision to have further surgeries has been very hard on my wallet. I have put in everything I have towards his medical care, but unfortunately it just isn't enough.  So, with the suggestions of Codee's dog family in NYC, I am here asking for help.

Friends, family, animal advocates: Codee is fighting, and I am fighting for him. I refuse to let money be the reason he has to stop fighting. Any little bit helps.  Please send positive vibes our way. I will keep everyone posted.

Thank you, with love and gratitude.
