CHARLES COLEMAN III
“CHARLIE’S STORY”
Charlie came into this world as a blessing on December 24, 2009. My son
Charles was born healthy and happy. I named him Charles Coleman III after
myself as my Father named me when I was born. Soon, our world was to come
to a shattering halt. Only four months later, the life I’d imagined with my son
would change forever.
May 2010, at four months old, at the hands of his mother, Charlie became a
victim of Shaken Baby Syndrome. After being sentenced to seven years for
aggravated assault and having to serve at least 85% of her penalty before being
considered for parole, she is no longer in his life. Our sentence and penalty
however, is forever.
Charlie’s injuries were extensive and horrific. He suffered numerous brain
bleeds resulting in permanent brain damage. The doctors put Charlie in a
medically induced coma to save his life and to give them time to assess the
damage that was done. Charlie cannot walk, talk or see. He cannot feed or
dress himself and will always be in diapers. He has numerous seizures every
day, takes many medications and requires around the clock care making it
impossible for me to maintain employment.
The bright spot of Charlie’s day is attending his medical daycare where he is
loved and cared for by the nurses and staff as if he was their own. Through
their support and tireless efforts, Charlie has received a specialized bed and an
adaptive stroller so that he can get around and sleep safely. He is transported
to and from school by a medically accessible van without which Charlie would
be homebound all the time.
Charlie is eligible for another year at the daycare. After that, I will not have the
support and the means that Charlie and I have come to rely on. I need to be
able to get my Son to and from the many doctor appointments he has and to be
able to take Charlie out myself.
I have looked into acquiring a medically accessible van and understand that,
fully equipped they can be in excess of $75,000.00 I do not have the means to
save or pay for this necessity. I am humbly asking for any donation you can
make, no matter how small, to help me purchase this van for my Charlie. It
would mean the world to us.
