As many of you know, Carrie Steinberg was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 10 years ago. She has spent the last decade managing the disease, living by herself, and getting around New York City mostly via scooter. Unfortunately, the city streets have torn her scooter to shreds, and it is no longer functional. In order to replace it, she has to pay out of pocket. It’s a big expense, hence the fundraiser!
On January 3, 2019, her spot was confirmed for a stem cell clinical trial that her neurologist has been developing for over 20 years. This is GREAT news! The trial requires her to be ambulatory. BUT her insurance requires her to be full-time in a wheelchair in order to cover a new scooter, and would eliminate her candidacy for the treatment. ‘Tis a paradox indeed. So let’s all pitch in a few bucks each to help Carrie get scootely-scootin’ around again!
She uses a scooter to run basic errands...i.e. go to the bank, post office, pharmacy, and the grocery store. The scooter is especially helpful for traveling long distances - anything above a NYC block is a long distance. Her balance is very shaky so carrying grocery bags is really not an option. We've been lucky with the weather so far this winter, but it's coming. Snow and ice can be especially treacherous for her walking. This new scooter is built to withstand NYC sidewalks and streets in all weather. It is much sturdier than her previous scooter!
Carrie starts the trial on January 30, and the treatments will happen every 2 months for the next 2 years. She will be blogging the whole process for everyone to stay part of it. If you’re interested in learning more about this trial, you can read more here: bit.ly/2QTw8YP
For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Amy, and Carrie and I are great friends. She never fails to impress me with her determination, razor sharp wit, and generous spirit. Let’s all show Carrie some love! XO
