Expenses for Carolina Cano's Family

$5,980 of $7,000 goal

Raised by 157 people in 3 months
Carolina Cano was killed on March 24 while on a run in Jersey City's Lincoln Park. As her friends, family, and community mourn this senseless loss, please come together to support her final expenses and lessen the burden for her family.

The most immediate need is to raise travel expenses for members of Carolina's family to travel here to handle final arrangements. Working with her church, who is communicating with her family, we believe $1,500 will cover these expenses - we will then update the goal based on information on funeral costs.

How will these funds be tracked?
Because GoFundMe does not operate in Peru, the funds will be transferred to the account of the US.-based organizer, who will then wire transfer funds to Carolina's family. In the interest of transparency, we will post screenshots/receipts of these wire transfers so that you can feel confident the money has gotten to her family.  We have been in touch with both Carolina's church and the Hudson County Office of Victim/Witness Advocacy, who are in touch with her family in Peru. Please reach out with any other questions.

Note that wire transfers are subject to processing fees - we appreciate any and all donation amounts to help cover Carolina's family costs as well as the processing fees of this fundraiser.

A message from Carolina's family: "the collected money has been well spent, with the expenses that caused our trip to the United States. Our family and I are very grateful for all the expressions of solidarity from the entire American community, I want you to know we have them always present in our prayers, because our parents always taught us respect and to be grateful to all who support us in every moment of our life."

As a reminder, this fundraiser will be closing soon so if you were intending to donate, now is a great time. At least one member of Carolina's family intends to return to the area during the trial, so the family will need to pay for additional travel then as well.

Thank you to all who have generously supported this family during an unthinkable difficulty.

Friends and neighbors, in about two weeks, I'll be closing down the fundraiser for Carolina Cano's family. You have all helped to do amazing things but I'll need to end it soon for my own time management reasons.

This is just a gentle reminder in case anyone has been intending to donate and hasn't gotten to it yet.

From speaking with her sisters via translator- most of the nearly $6,000 raised went to their flighted to get here and the emergency Visa application process. I will be transferring the remaining funds while they are here to settle up the funeral expenses (the Hudson County victims fund was also covered a portion of this, which is why it has been difficult to get a full estimate of how much the family needs). In two weeks, I will transfer any remaining funds when they are back in Peru so they have flexibility for any unplanned expenses.

Her family was tremendously grateful for all who have given and left messages, and for those who have contributed to the makeshift memorial at the park and worked to honor her legacy.

Last night, Carolina's family held services to say goodbye to their beloved sister. I was able to meet with her sisters, share the lovely messages you have all left (in Englishand spanish language), and convey the thoughtsand prayers of our neighborhood. Her sisters told me they were deeply appreciative of the support, from deep in their hearts.

Carolina's sister spoke with a local reporter and shared their gratitude and some lovely thoughts about their sister. I recommend the full piece.

"Ysabela Cano said she was overwhelmed and surprised by the outpouring of support after her sister’s murder.... a GoFundMe page that raised $5,900 to help Ysabela Cano and her sister, Margarita Cano, travel to the United States and pay funeral costs. They arrived Thursday.

“I want to tell everyone how grateful I feel,” said Ysabela Cano, speaking through a Spanish translator. “My father taught us to be respectful and grateful in a situation like this… My family, on behalf of Carolina, want to thank everyone for all the generosity we have received.”

Ysabela visited Lincoln Park and said it was beautiful.

“I love the fact that when I visited, I saw the memorial,” Ysabela Cano said of flowers and other items placed beside the lake. “It was very beautiful. I didn’t think anyone would ever do something like that.”'

We have MANY updates to share for the supporters of this campaign!

First, a second transfer was made to Carolina's family in Peru on Apr. 8, 2019. The receipt is attached in the interest of transparency. We were able to significantly reduce the fees involved by waiting for all the funds to transfer in first from GoFund Me - because the first transfer had to be done quickly based on the family's need, we had to front the money with a credit card, which had significant fees. This is the method we will use moving forward.

Today (Sunday 4/14), community members held a Tribute Run/Walk at Lincoln Park, and local officials planted a tree in Carolina's memory. This event raised another $237 in cash donations for this fund which have now been included. You can read more about the event at the Jersey Journal ( https://www.nj.com/hudson/2019/04/the-sweetest-person-i-knew-jersey-city-community-honors-carolina-cano-with-run-tree-planting.html) and on the Facebook event ( https://www.facebook.com/events/371459423580270/).

We are so grateful that the community has rallied to support this fundraiser. We have exceeded our goal, but will continue taking contributions as there are many unknown expenses ahead for Carolina's family as they settle her affairs in the US. We will continue to provide documentation as funds are transferred and collected.

Thank you for your support!
