Camel Dairies in Rajasthan.

Develop an Industry and Save a Culture.

We would like to assist a camel dairy co-op get off the ground in doing so build an industry for the camel breeders of Rajasthan one they can own and be proud of.

Through the tireless work of Dr Ilse Köhler-Rollefson and Hanwant Singh in the Pali district, this work has already begun and with goodwill and financial assistance, the program will grow and the concept will spread through the broader community. Ilsa and Hanwant are highly respected and dedicated to the cause of developing the industry for the benefit of all, they currently manage the LPPS Camel Conservation Centre where a pilot operation has been established.

The people of Rajasthan have been breeding camels for hundreds of years but with increasing dominance of motor vehicles in transport and agriculture the camel breeders are losing their only form of income and their culture.

If the current trend continues they will end up with nothing, already many young people are forced to move to cities to look for low paid work in pursuit of a better life… but this outcome can be changed and without a huge amount of money, just the will of people who want to make a real difference.  The camel breeders of Rajasthan   don’t want a fist full of dollars to buy new cars or mobile phones, they want advice, guidance and the basic equipment needed to grow a viable, sustainable industry.

We hope to raise $50,000 and give the money to a very small co-op dairy currently operating in the Pali district of Rajasthan, in order for it to develop into a sustainable operation providing income to the co-operative members.

The money will go to purchase a small refrigerated truck to collect the milk from the individual camel owners, testing equipment, a pasteurising machine, bottling equipment and other key smaller items required to make this a stand-alone facility. This will in turn act as a model for other small communities on how to establish this type of business in an improvised country under very tough conditions.

Camel milk is now seen as one of the world’s super foods and is gaining recognition for its ability to assist with Diabetes and Autism. Products such as cheese, ice cream and chocolate are currently made from it and the price of the milk is quite high compared to cow’s milk. The possibilities are enormous and demand continues to grow for this fabulous product.

This single drop of help will encourage more co-op dairies to be developed, the idea will spread throughout Rajasthan, breathing life back into the culture while developing a very sustainable industry around a great animal.
