Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC)
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

On behalf of the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) South Campus Student Life Department, we propose the following service-learning trip to Flint, Michigan with intention of serving a community that is facing extreme adversity from a water crisis. Members of the community now face various negative physiological and cognitive effects of consuming tap water that is contaminated with lead and agents that harm the human body.

By engaging in tasks that promote social justice, such as fundraising for safe bottled water and advocating on behalf of the community members of Flint, we believe that CCAC and the entire Flint community can stand to greatly benefit from this service-learning trip. By involving student organizations, such as the CCAC South Social Work Club - Society for Social Advocacy (SSA), and the CCAC South Men of Merit Initiative (MMI), CCAC will be able to support not only the overall college mission, but also the individual missions of each student organization. Student organizations that have a strong service aspect have the duty to promote social advocacy and justice, especially in a time of dire need such as the Flint Water Crisis.

In connection with CCAC’s 50th Anniversary celebration, we are proposing a goal to raise enough money to purchase 5,000 gallons of fresh, safe, filtered water that we will provide to local organizations in the Flint community. In order to fully capture the Flint Water Crisis and the impact our trip will make, the CCAC South Improv, Film, and Theater Club has agreed to send some of its members on the trip to create a documentary, which will be shown at CCAC's Diversity Day and/or the college's Commencement Ceremonies. In addition, all campuses and centers of CCAC will be asked to participate in the fundraising efforts, thus supporting the “one college” initiative at CCAC.

All cash donations are for the sole purpose of purchasing water for Flint, Michigan. CCAC students plan to purchace the bulk water in advance from a  local grocery store in Michigan and distribute that water throughout various community-based organizations in the greater Flint area.

We sincerely thank you in advance for your consideration of this service-learning trip and appreciate your sensitivity to those affected by the Flint Water Crisis.
