Buy Congress' Internet Data
Since Congress has made our privacy a commodity, let’s band together to buy THEIR privacy.
This GoFundMe will pay to purchase the data of Donald Trump and every Congressperson who voted for SJR34, and to make it publicly available.
PS: No, we won't "doxx" people. We will not share information that will impact the safety & security of their families (such as personal addresses). However, all other details are fair game. It says so right in the resolution that they voted to approve.
Game on, Congress.
PS: Proceeds from this campaign will be used to buy Congress’ data once it becomes available. If that is impossible for any reason or if there is a surplus from this campaign, 100% of the balance of proceeds will go to the ACLU to help them continue to fight for our privacy rights.
So as promised, in the interest of ensuring that these funds are utilized in an expedient manner toward securing Internet privacy protections and fighting for the privacy rights of all citizens, I’ll withdraw in my name and then donate 100% of the funds raised here to organizations that are serving to fight for and protect those basic civil rights. (This is minus the GoFundMe service charges. No funds will go to or be held by any other organization or person, including me.)
One organization that is doing incredible work in this field is the Electronic Frontier Foundation. ( https://www.eff.org/) This organization exists to fight for your privacy and free speech in the digital realm. They are a 501(3)c with responsible financial stewardship and 100% accountability and transparency ( https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=7576#).
As this is the closest we currently have to an organization that is fighting unjust efforts to strip Americans of their privacy specifically in the digital realm, I’d like to allocate half the proceeds from this fundraiser to this organization. The other half, as promised, will be donated to the ACLU.
In the interest of complete accountability and transparency, if you wish to withdraw your funds from this fundraiser you’re able to do so by making a request within the next 3 days through GoFundMe's customer support team: http://bit.ly/2qukHJP
Otherwise, I hope you’ll join me in celebrating this effort as a win for privacy rights. Your passion and generosity will ensure that these good organizations will have the necessary funding to continue the fight for your civil liberties and freedom- both online and off.
In order to keep the amount static for organized distribution of funds, no other donations will be accepted at this time, but the campaign will remain up as a record of everybody’s collective efforts and your incredible show of unity in the fight for the privacy rights of all citizens. Good job, guys. Thank you.
Don't wait for the whole $500 million. As soon as you have enough for the bill's primary author, buy their data and turn it loose. Work your way down from the top, champions and instigators to the hungry little climbers grabbing for the bottom rung. And the lobbyists for the bill. And the CEOs who hired them. And let's boycott every ISP that won't sign an enforceable pledge to keep our data private. But keep in mind: What this bill did was let them sell our privacy openly and brazenly -- and wholesale. They were already doing it under the table. The price just went down, because the racket was legalized.
there are at least 4 other gofundme projects doing the same thing. You should band together and combine your efforts
I want Trump's first. Even if the goal isn't reached for congress, Trumps history THEN the rest to the ACLU
Misha, I love this idea and have already made a pledge, but 500 million? Surely that's WAY more than is needed, and a goal we're unlikely to reach. Surely $500,000 would be more than enough. While I'm fine with adding to my previous donations to the ACLU, I'd really like to see this project achieve its announced purpose. So please consider adjusting the goal to a more reasonable level. Thanks again for starting this!
500 Million is a lofty goal. Instead of all or nothing, can we buy the Congressperson's data one at a time? Start with the ones who had the greatest effect on this bill then either work your way down the list or pick them out of a hat.
Misha, awesome idea and drive. Please extend the deadline if you need to. Also, please releases all of the data, don't hold back, they aren't holding back on ours. It is time that congress feels the pinch the rest of the nation feels -- with this issue AND healthcare and any other issue they are using to abuse us and the environment.
Maybe just a few select members of Congress could be chosen and the goal could be reduced, and more attainable. This would also send a message.
Once again consent is as the forefront. What is it that these people do not seem to understand about it? Consent, the right to privacy? Not rocket science - Yet here we are. Thank you for doing this Misha! Speak up. Resist! ♥
It's all about the KICKBACKS they're getting. I say PUT ALL their data out there. Impact their security. They think this is a game? Put where their kids go to school. They'll find out real quick it's not.
I donated - please consider combining efforts with this guy. https://searchinternethistory.com/ https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/621q9g/house_passes_hr230_repealing_fcc_internet_privacy/dfj0sw1/
There's another person doing this as well. Perhaps you guys should join forces!! His name is Adam McElhaney and his campaign is called "Purchase Private Internet Histories" I believe
I love this. My only concern is we'll be paying the ISPs who fought for this legislation. Don't want to reward them for their lobbying. Any way around that?
I just want you to know, that what I think you are doing is really awesome. You are defending those who can't defend themselves, let's show them that. Just because we may be hard to hear, doesn't mean we're silent.
Good morning! I love this idea and approach. How much does it cost per Congress person? Maybe as enough money comes in you can buy one at a time and release the info? This might help inspire people to give and feel confident about where the funds are going.
While I applaud the effort to fight back against what happened, this campaign is doomed to fail. You can't buy people's internet data. That's not how it works. You can try all you like, but no one is going to sell you a specific person's data. Read https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20170329/13234837037/no-you-cant-buy-congresss-internet-data-anyone-elses.shtml for a better understanding of what's actually going on. Please don't waste your money without at least reading that so you understand why this is a waste.
There seem to be multiple campaigns. Can you combine forces?
I would like to know who gets the $500 million if you do raise it.
Congratulations, Congress, you've just pillaged our right to privacy for profit. Our privacy is NOT yours to sell!
Too bad you cannot buy individual's data like this guys claims. But suckers will always be easily separated from their money. https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20170329/13234837037/no-you-cant-buy-congresss-internet-data-anyone-elses.shtml
