Let me tell you a little bit about my wonderful father-in-law, David Shawn Bunch.

David was born in 1960 in Galveston, Texas to Homer and Marion Bunch. David is a loving father to 3 children (Misty, Sean, and Lane) and 4 grandchildren (Mario, Xavier, Catalina, and Aiden). David is an active member of the First Baptist Church of La Grange. He has participated in three mission trips to El Salvador. There, he helped provide proper medical care and fresh drinking water, and helped build their local church.

In October 2011, David was diagnosed with Stage IV throat cancer. Over the next 10 months, he went through a rigorous treatment plan. It began with chemotherapy for the first 6 months, followed by a chemo-radiation combination for the next 4 months.

By the end of 2012, the CT scans revealed that he was finally done with treatment and he was officially cancer-free

About three years later, in July 2015, David began feeling burning pain and soreness in his throat. The doctors told him that the pain was from radiation necrosis, a focal structural lesion that occurs at the original tumor site. He was put on antibiotics to treat the infection. It didn’t work. He began hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized room, for one month. It didn’t work. The doctors tried antibiotics, vitamin E oil, and blood thinners. It didn’t work.

By the beginning of 2016, more tests were done. After the next set of CT scans, an otolaryngologist (a head and neck specialist) told him that the ulcer in his throat was growing larger. He was sent to get a biopsy at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

On February 6, 2016 (his grandson, Aiden’s, birthday), he was told that he has a cancerous tumor in his throat under the ulcer he had developed from radiation. His cancer had returned. The doctors say that the outlook is not good. IF he survives major 8-hour surgery or chemotherapy and radiation, he only has a 20% chance of survival. In addition, within the 20% chance, he would probably only live for 1-3 more years.

After hours of research, David found the Rubio Cancer Center in Mexico who specializes in alternative treatment for patients like David. At Rubio Cancer Center, David will undergo immunotherapy along with detoxification, a special diet and electric shock therapy. Doctors will remove T-cells from his body and make specialized vaccines to be put back into his body. The process is set to take a minimum of 6-8 weeks. Unfortunately, the costs are extremely high. It will cost him $7,000/week plus travel expenses. This treatment is David’s best hope to find recovery and overcome this terrible disease. All of the donations will be used to help David pay for these medical expenses.

Here are a few words from David: "I love all of my family and friends so much. I love life. Prayers during this difficult time would be extremely appreciated. Thank y’all so much for your continued help and support."
