By nature , Firefighters rarely, IF EVER, ask for help. In the real world, we know that everyone needs help in their lives at some point..
After 20 years of dedicated service as a firefighter and EMT-C with Local 732, I retired. And six years later, I married my soulmate Cheryll. A little over a year after starting our married life together, we were devastated to learn Cheryll had Multiple Sclerosis.
Over the next 15 years, I have watched a woman who had such a passion for life and an extremely outgoing and friendly personality steadily decline as this disease ravaged her body, forcing her to be unable to work and go on disability at age 38.
Cheryll is now at the point that she is in drug failure, meaning that the disease modifying drugs that are meant to help slow progression of her MS are no longer effective in fighting this MonSter disease.
The neurologist has made it clear that without MS drugs helping with this battle, that the already extensive progression of this disease will force this 49 year old woman I love and who had such a love of life and helping others into a wheelchair within 2 years.
Cheryll's only alternative at this time is a stem cell transplant. This procedure is very extensive and grueling and requires hospitalization for 3+ months to complete treatment.
Our healthcare coverage will cover a portion of treatment, but our out of pocket expenses will be substantial. Over these past 15 years, with Cheryll's numerous untold number of hospitalizations and cost of MS drugs has left a retiree and a wife on disability with very little in our savings.
Any help you can give to let Cheryll get this desperately needed life changing procedure would be truly appreciated by both of us beyond words...
