Bowen Goes to College 2016!

$14,850 of $25,000 goal

Raised by 113 people in 57 months

Bowen High School is making college dreams come true for dozens of first generation college-goers. We need your support to make these dreams come true. Because our school is 95% low-income, many of our families do not have the discretionary funds to navigate this first time college experience. Toward tackling that challenge, we are continuously fundraising but believe that the BHS online community of family and friends can provide further support toward reaching our $20,000 goal.

With $20,000, we will be able to strongly assist the enrollment of more than 50 BHS students into the following colleges: Paul Quinn, University of Wisconsin-Osh Kosh, University of Illinois-Chicago, Chicago State University, Harold Washington, Moraine Valley, Western Illinois, Northern Illinois, Florida Memorial, University of Illinois-Springfield, Saint Xavier, Central State, Miles College, Tougaloo College, Lincoln University....

With your monetary support, we will be able to purchase items such as: luggage, housing deposits, tuition deposits, Greyhound tickets, Amtrak tickets, bed sheets, hampers, toiletries, cell phone minutes, travel snacks, school supplies, etc.

Your donation can change the trajectory of our students' lives, so PLEASE GIVE!!!

Hello donors! Meet two recent Bowen grads, Jasmyn and Mark, who will be embarking on a new journey at Tuskegee University in Alabama.

Mark was a strong student throughout his time at Bowen and had a ton of college options to choose from. For Jasmyn, who ranked in our top ten, the choice was simpler; she chose Tuskegee because it's home to the only veterinary program at a historically black university, and she plans to become a veterinarian. We are excited that these students will have the experience of living independently in a new place, especially one with such a rich history.

We look forward to their success at the college level and beyond! Congratulations Mark and Jasmyn - we are so proud of you!

The transition from high school to college is challenging enough without having to worry about financial issues - we do our best to make sure our students are able to focus 100% on academics and adjusting to college life. The goal of our campaign is to raise the dollars needed to successfully send our graduates off to college.

Attending school out-of-state is a wonderful life-changing opportunity, and it's important that our students know they are supported. This fundraiser has helped our students pay for dorm deposits, textbooks, luggage, Greyhound tickets, and countless other items.

Help us support our young people and please share this link with your network of friends, family and colleagues and beg them to help us make a difference. Your donation can change the trajectory of our students' lives, so PLEASE GIVE!!!

Happy Friday, donors! Check out this post written by one of our top students from the class of 2014, Ms Jasmine Bennett. For all of the challenges that come with working with youth, it's words like these remind us how important our work truly is.

"I went to a high school that helped students pay for SEVERAL things that a college freshman may need! I went to a high school that encouraged college, even though it wasn't always expected by the students or families! I went to a high school that pushed me, even when I was struggling with myself and the life that I was living! I went to a high school that showed pride in the small things that students accomplished, because sometimes, those small things may have been hard to achieve! I went to a high school where every student was known on an individual basis, and every student had some type of relationship with a faculty or staff member! I went to a high school where students weren't expected to go to college, or do anything else to further their education, but my school made sure that we had some kind of plan! I went to a school that pushed its students to try harder, even when we didn't want to, even when we wanted to throw the towel in! I went to a high school that made home visits and called parents...formed relationships with these parents, and formed trust! ... The New Bowen High School is a great place to me! I want to thank everyone from Bowen who helped me to get to where I am! I really do appreciate it!"

Congratulations, Jasmine - we are SO proud of you!

Below is one of the newest bulletin boards we now have on display at Bowen. Our post-secondary coach conceived the idea of showcasing recent graduates from three different classes to celebrate these particular students for their commitment to higher education, to highlight the trend of college persistence among our alumni, and to inspire and challenge our current Boilermakers. The students featured in the display are living proof of the many opportunities that await our students once they leave our school community.

Although their journeys have not all been easy, the support that YOU have provided has made a tremendous difference in the lives of these young people.

Thank you for your dedication to the next generation of leaders. We appreciate your help - no contribution is too small!

Hello again donors -

Meet Stephanie Torres and Jackie Pinedo, two of our top-ranking graduates!

Stephanie, who has been near the top of her class during all four years here at Bowen, has excelled as a student athlete and artist. Stephanie is planning to pursue a career in art education. Although she was awarded a generous scholarship to Valparaiso University in Indiana, she has decided to attend Truman College in Chicago, where she will complete the education requirements of her degree before going away to school.

Jackie joined the Bowen community later in her high school career, but made a strong impression on teachers and staff in her short time with us. A high achiever, Jackie took advantage of every opportunity to challenge herself by filling her schedule advanced placement and college credit-bearing courses. When it came time to select a college, Jackie too had several options, and decided to attend Roosevelt University this fall.

Together, Jackie and Stephanie were awarded more than $275,000 in scholarships!

We are excited about our students' success at the college level and beyond! Congratulations Stephanie and Jackie - we are so proud of you!

There are thousands of Bowen graduates and many of them are on Facebook. Some of us have done very well for ourselves, quite a few of us our comfortable, and there are probably very few us of who don't have $5 to spare. If we all donated that amount, I think Bowen could reach its goal and we will have all participated in setting up a legacy at very little cost but with very good thought.
