Cancer Strikes Twice in 8 Months

It didn't hit me at first. I really had cancer again after going through an unwanted hysterectomy just 6 months earlier. I left the oncology office and headed back to work, but by the time I got home I was angry and I didn't know why. In the light of the next day I realized the anger stemmed from feeling out of control. I didn't like the  diagnosis and I didn't like the doctor's prescription - Radiation.

The alternative choices seemed way out of reach. I trusted the Oasis of Hope in Tijuano ( www.oasisofhope.com), but how would I ever come up with $30,000.  I had just accepted a job because we couldn't make it on social security.

Thanks to all the love, prayers and contributions, and after a ton of research, I have begun treatment with Carla Gilmore at Love Alkaline Living Wellness Center ( www.lovealkalineliving.com). Carla is only 30 minutes away and “pay as you go” instead of a huge lump sum, but treatment will continue as long as necessary.  More importantly she treats the entire body with healthy, non-damaging therapies, diet and coaching.  Please read my 3/17 update for more about my treatment and also check out www.lovealkalineliving.com.

For those just tuning in: A routine ultrasound in 2016 revealed polyps. We never expected a subsequent biopsy would test positive for uterine cancer. Then a September 6th total hysterectomy eliminated the cancer according to the oncologist (I wish I’d known about Carla then.)

Fast forward. February 1, feeling almost myself, I began training for commission sales. On the job less than a month, I began bleeding.  On March 3rd I got the results from a vaginal biopsy: a rare cancer - the conventional  treatment is radiation; but radiation can cause cancer and has been known to damage nearby organs. In a subsequent exam the GYN radiologist confirmed the presence of a tumor. If the tumor grows, the treatment would be surgical removal of the cancer and surrounding organs including the bladder!

I researched various options, including radiation, before discovering Carla’s wellness center. Oasis of Hope would be $30,000 for 3 weeks plus additional for meds at home. Dr. Carlos Garcia at Utopia Wellness Clinic is $36,000 for 2 months of 2 hours 5 day/week. I learned that radiation damages DNA and, what often seems a quick healing results in a more potent cancer. Plus the abdomen holds many other vital organs which can be so badly damaged by scar tissue that surgery is required. I already have adjacent organs that are creating discomfort and not behaving the same since my hysterectomy.

I’m not afraid to die. I know where I’m going, but I have lots to live for and lots more to give to my family, to the world through my writing, to aspiring writers by facilitating writers workshops, and to the assisted living patients we visit with our dog as part of Canines for Christ ( www.k9forchrist.org) I'm ready for the next adventure, and, my prayer is, that my research, experience and treatment will help others.

I've reduced my goal to $15,000. I don't believe the original $35,000 will be necessary since I've opted for a much less expensive protocol with Carla Gilmore  - far less than she could competively charge. I'm hoping $10,000 will be enough, but we need to hit the cancer hard right now to stop it from growing.

Any amount will help. Dollars are made of pennies! I especially ask for your prayers. God is certainly able to provide a miracle. Regardless, I know good things will come from this because Jesus works all things together for good when we walk in His will (Romans 8:28)

Thank you for caring enough to read this and for your consideration. I know there are many needs crying for your money, but I promise to do my best to use your gift as wisely and expediantly as possible.

Good news and bad news today: The great news (I think) is that both the oncologist and I believe the tumor is receding. The vaccine is hopefully doing its job. Please keep praying.
Unfortunately, I now have anemia that would be best addressed by transfusions, but the Dendritic Cell Vaccine I received at the Oasis of Hope would be compromised. So I'm scheduled for four I-V iron infusions of 3 hours each beginning Thursday, August 12.
This is literally an iron in the works. I am trying to eat more dark greens and I've added daily protein into my diet. I am scheduled to return to Oasis in mid September for booster shots, so I'm praying the anemia will clear up before then. Please pray with me and help financially if you can. The need continues intense. Love and hugs:)

The dendritic cells will continue to multiply with hopefully an improved CT in early Sept before I'm due to return to Oasis of Hope for booster shots of Dendritic Cell Vaccine.
Today was a rough day. I spent most of the day on the couch. Sitting hurt, but I'm feeling better now - just in time for bed! I wasn't sure I'd be able to go to church but I've learned that sitting with my feet on a chair usually helps. I think I'll be OK although driving usually hurts.
I'm taking chemo and a host of other nutroceuticals and medicines prescribed at Oasis plus Ibprofin in the daytime and Oxy/Tylinol (very low dose) twice during the night. Oh and stool softeners and laxative. My new oncologist, Dr. Araujo, prescribed something with a ton of potential side effects to get rid of the parasites. I haven't had any side effects and I hope the animals are gone! Yuk! He also gave me a nausea prescription which I haven't used yet.
I start 4 new anti-cancer products today. Please pray for no side effects!

I had a telephone appointment a couple of days ago with Dr. Cecena, the lead doctor for my case at Oasis of Hope. He is not concerned about any of my symptoms. He reminded me that during his lectures he said patients would often feel worse and have swelling due to the therapies in addition to the toxins released from the die-off of cells due to the Dendritic cell vaccine multiplication. He biggest concern was that my kidney function is working properly, so my primary care doctor (Trevor Rose) has ordered blood work to keep tabs on that. So I don't feel great, but apparently that's not bad news!

Can I be honest? You're my friends, right? My grandmother used to say, "I feel punk." Well, that's how I've been feeling since we returned home.

Dr. Cecena at Oasis of Hope said patients often feel worse after treatment as the body tries to adjust plus the Dendritic Cell Vaccine is multiplying and killing cancer cells. So the die-off releases toxins.

Please continue to pray and help as you are able. Pain is intermittent, discomfort almost constant, nausea makes it hard to eat especially raw which is supposed be 70% of my diet! I have a GYN appt next week to learn if there's an infection in addition to the tumor.

But I'm back to writing! Yay! Low energy means short writing bursts, but I want to get my biographical fiction, B17 Down, completed, It's about my dad and mom's courtship, marriage, my birth and his crash into Berlin and 13 months as a POW. Prayer for that project is high on my list of priorities!

I would have never guessed (nor would you!) that when I opened my home to you and Cindy over 30 years ago that the love that blossomed then would grow into a tree shading me in my time of need. Or that your hospitality would become many times over the little bit I offered you. I love you both and thank you so much for being in the right place with the right timing to help us get ready for the next step. Love you...
