Hello! My name is Bethanee Ricard and I'm a rising junior at Wheaton College, Massachusetts. I got into Wheaton on a Posse Foundation scholarship as a result of my hard work and dedication through my years of study in high school. As a first generation college student, I have had many first experiences throughout my first few years of college, some exciting and some challenging. I've recently been accepted into an internship program through Boston University where I'll not only be learning about Australian culture and society, but will also get to experience life as an broadcasting/journalism intern.
Starting August 19th, 2019, I'll be taking core classes and electives pertaining to my field of study which is broadcasting and journalism. For the last 7 weeks, I'll be placed with an organization around Sydney where I'll be interning full-time while taking an elective that discusses mass media in Australia or how to develop strategies for brand advertising and promo campaigns. This program allows me to complete the majority of my Film & New Media Studies major, with the exception of a senior seminar course, and gives me time to focus on completing my double major in Spring 2020.
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is just not having the same financial means as my classmates to participate in other travel programs. The program itself does not have a meal plan, which means I'll be spending money on groceries almost weekly, and at least $3,000 is recommended for this expense. Other expenses include public transportation to and from my internship location ($650) and books ($100). I am hoping to fundraise enough money to cover these costs and I am also working this summer to save up for my goal.
My aspiration in life is to become a broadcast journalist and this program allows me to not only learn about media from an international perspective, but gives me the opportunity to gain experiences with professionals and develop skills that can help me achieve my goals in the future. I'll never get an opportunity like this ever again and financial adversity should be the last thing to hinder me from making the most out my college experience.
