Dear Friends of Hope for the Elderly Ministries of Uganda,
Our mission with this fundraiser is to provide beds and bedding for 25 of the Elderly of Amor Village, Uganda. The estimated costs of $75 per person will provide a mattress, blankets, and a bed frame for each person. Currently, the most vulnerable of Amor’s community are sleeping on mats placed on the floor or ground. While they would be most grateful for the mattresses alone, including bed frames would ensure that they are not only more comfortable but that the bedding lasts longer.
Traditionally, the grandparents and great-grandparents of Uganda are supported by their families. There is not a social welfare system in place for those left without this support. However, the AIDS/HIV epidemic in Uganda has left many of the elderly without adult children to care for them. Often, they are caring for orphaned grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They live on very meager means; providing food for themselves and the children they care for is the priority. Other basic needs and essentials, like a bed and a decent place to sleep, become unattainable.
The Founder of Hope for the Elderly and her family are doing so much to lift up their community, now and into the future. They personally care for 27 orphaned children. Through sponsorship from friends like you from around the world, children in the community are able to attend school, both primary school, and vocational education. Educating teachers, nurses, and a doctor! They have initiated sustainable farming and fruit tree-planting projects to provide food and an income for participants. There is so much promise! However, there is still much work to be done.
The need for beds for the elderly is immediate and can best be addressed by direct donations. With our first fundraising campaign, you raised enough funds to provide beds to 14 of our precious friends! Thank you!
We hope to raise the remaining funds needed, for a total of 39 recipients.
