BEYOND LIMITS: Awaken Your Potential knows that the human spirit can transcend anything.  It views challenge as an Opportunity and that we’re better together. One of its mantras is that the Difficult we do Right Away; the Impossible takes a Little Longer.

BEYOND LIMITS grew out of experiences of its founder, Jacqui “Dr. J.” Lowman.  Back in 2012 Jacqui experienced a near fatal catastrophic bleed.  No one expected her to survive.  The shock to her system left her unable to move or speak.  During her long physical rehabilitation, she had time to do a lot of reflecting.  She’d received a rare gift: a second chance.  She needed to give back, to make the most of this opportunity.  But how?

As a person with physical challenges, Jacqui had heard a lot of “CAN’T” in her life.  As a teacher, she was used to hearing that word from her students all the time. But she’d come to realize—and her physical rehabilitation affirmed this—that what holds us back in life is not the physical but the mental—the attitudes and “CAN’Ts” of people, including ourselves. Just because we can’t do something the way that others do it doesn’t mean that we can’t do it at all. We need the right perspective.  Jacqui’s experiences had given her a different way to see.  Now she needed to act on this.

BEYOND LIMITS: Awaken Your Potential came together in late 2014.  It needed to test and enact its philosophy and vision by pulling people together to be extraordinary.  A team needed to tackle something that would be hard for anyone, let alone a team with a member who could not walk.  So its team members decided to climb Mt. Katahdin, the end of the Appalachian Trail and generally considered its hardest part.  This had never been done with such a team before.  The team members knew that the only way that they would succeed was to be a true team, only as strong as their weakest link. So they needed to make all stronger and better.  The experience was transformative for all involved: they were forever changed for the better.  How could they build upon this?

BEYOND LIMITS needed something that would span a longer time and that could involve many more people.  It had already done the end of the Appalachian Trail.  Why not do the whole thing: all 2,190 miles?  And thus the BEYOND LIMITS Appalachian Trail Adventure was conceived.

From March through late September/early October 2017, a BEYOND LIMITS team will thru hike the Appalachian Trail, from Georgia to Maine. This time the team will be bigger: ultimately, it will consist of hundreds of hikers, trail coordinators, trail support volunteers.  Jacqui and her service dog, Saint, will hike the whole trail with the assistance of adaptive equipment and lots of help from other team members, friends, supporters.  Anyone who wants to be involved can find a niche.  Hikers and trail coordinators will flow in and out every few weeks.  Trail support volunteers will be involved for as little or as long as they wish.

What’s the purpose?  To demonstrate that nothing is impossible.  To send out the ultimate message of hope. This is not about disability but ability: the unquenchable ability of the human spirit to rise one more time than it falls.  A true team, working together, brings out the extraordinary in each member.  The BEYOND LIMITS team will be blogging and documenting all along so that students and community members can follow them every step of the way. The goal is not to get everyone to hike the Appalachian Trail. The goal is to get people to try to climb their own personal mountains.  It’s amazing what we can accomplish if we try.

Stubborness. Tenacity. Drive. Motivation. Believing that a team can accomplish what seems impossible. Are you part of our tribe? Want to be? Donate now to help us do what most say is impossible.
