Brookline Farmers’ Market SNAP MATCH PROGRAM

IN SHORT:

The Brookline Farmers’ Market SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) MATCH PROGRAM seeks to raise $7,500 dollars to distribute to our customers who make use of SNAP (in 2017.  We are asking your help in helping us to combat food insecurity by donating to our SNAP MATCH PROGRAM FUND.  100% of dollars raised here will go directly to our customers who use SNAP.  We cover all administrative costs to this program using the 100% volunteer labor of our Board, as well as a grant we received from the Massachusetts Farmers Market SNAP Support Project to fund our SNAP Associate position at the market.

WHO WE ARE:

The Brookline Farmers’ Market has been running for over thirty years in Coolidge Corner, thanks to our hard-working vendors and wonderful customers.  Our 30± vendors bring a wide range of farmed and/or locally produced products, most of which are produced right here in Massachusetts or just across the line in New Hampshire.  We are committed to providing our community access to fresh local healthful foods and making direct connections between farmers and the community that we live in.  We support local farmers, artisans and food producers.  We educate the public about food and agriculture. We foster direct connections between farmers and consumers, and we cultivate and strengthen support of a local economy.  Part of our mission at the Brookline Farmers’ Market is to provide food security for all. To do this we must insure that low-income families have increased opportunities to purchase healthy food. The ability to eat fresh, local, nutritious food is a privilege that some people take for granted.  We want to extend that privilege to all.

THE SNAP MATCH PROGRAM:

In order to lower the economic barriers of eating locally produced nutritious food, our market is set up to accept SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - formerly known as “food stamps”).  We then DOUBLE the purchasing power of customers SNAP dollars by providing them with a 100% match, up to ten dollars per market. Being able to purchase $20 worth of nutrient dense, farm fresh foods for only $10 makes an enormous difference for our customers who use SNAP.  We heard a lot of feedback last year that people couldn’t have shopped at the market without the SNAP doubling match program, and it was very important to their families.  This year we are already on track to give out 3 times the amount of matching dollars we distributed in 2016 due to the increased awareness in the community of our SNAP MATCH PROGRAM.  We have in past years received a few large donations from anonymous members of the community and now we are are also asking you, our wider community of market supporters, to assist with this effort.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP OUT:

We are asking you to donate whatever you can, small or large, so that we may continue to support our community members who need a little extra help.  The Brookline Farmers’ Market is a non-profit organization, but we do not at this time have 501c3 status from the IRS.  Therefore, please note that your donations are not tax-deductible.  What your donations can do though is to make a huge impact on helping local individuals and families to have access to affordable, local, and healthful food choices.
