Big Corn Island, Nicaragua - an island off the coast of Nicaragua with about 6,000 people and all of their pets, including hundreds and hundreds of dogs and cats. Though this beautiful island has many aspects that make it a wonderful place, you know what this island doesn't have? A single veterinarian. All of the people on this island have limited access to medical care for themselves, and have NO veterinary care for their animals.
This is where we come in - the plight of this island was brought to my attention, and I knew we could help. The motto of our trip has become the words of Dr Seuss, 'Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, it's not going to get better, it's not.' We knew that we could help, and so we must, and we are.
In January of 2016 myself and a team of veterinary professionals journeyed down to this remote island and held a clinic for 5 days. In that time we were able to spay/neuter about 80 dogs and cats, and vaccinate just over 300.
We spent the year fundraising, and went back in February 2017 - this time with a slightly larger team, including a second veterinarian, and were able to hold steady with around 80 spays/neuters, but increase our vaccine numbers to 450!!
The island has so much potential, and the people there are good people, who want what is best for their pets - they just often don't know what they need, or have the means to get it. Our goal is to educate them - teach them what our pets need to eat, what parasites we can protect them against, and what viruses. Teach them about the importance of spaying and neutering, and all of the things we take for granted here in the states with care for our pets.
