A Student Midwife on a Mission

Donation protected
What We are Raising Money For
I am attending the Midwives College of Utah studying to become a CPM (certified professional midwife). The goal is to become a licensed midwife so that I can add my two hands and heart towards efforts, to  prevent infant mortality  and to serve families in their overall journey into childbearing, childbirth, and  parenthood.

How the Money Will be Used
This money will play a pivotal role in me making it to all of my student midwifery assignments that I will take on.
Not only am I a student, but I also do house cleaning to make a living. Your donations will help me keep a roof over my head while going through clinicals.  Also, for transportation to and from the midwifery assignments.  With your dontations it will help me muster through all these living expenses and continue this important step in this Midwifery Program.
Your investment in me, would mean so much to the success of this.

Without the help of the community, and all the emotional and moral support I have gotten.... I would not have been able to make it this far. Now about a year into this Midwifery Program, I am asking for your help monetarily. I have landed an Apprenticeship clinical placement with Birthstream of Davis, Ca  a local Midwifery Practice. This was really unexpected and such a blessing.
Apprenticeships do not pay, and I am spending anywhere from and estimated  35-40 hours weekly with this practice to gain necesary and required skills.  A clinical placement is how I will learn the clinical skills required to actually become a competent practicing midwife one day.

This Fundraiser will remain open , so if you cannot donate now, but would like to please remeber that it will be open until I complete my program.

Who I Am

I am a Student Midwife on a Mission.  I am known by two names,  Felicia the beautiful name my mother gave me at birth.  And Most of my dear friends and companions know me as Sister Ma'at.  I am a Student of Freedom Struggles, an ICTC Certified Full-Circle Doula , I am a mother of a little girl who is three. I am passionate about the wellbeing of people and concerned about the direction many of the "modern" practices are leading us

I was raised in the Bay Area, in my younger years I was a high school drop out, like many of our youth and I had a lot of struggles growing up. I took part in a lot of unhealthy self destructive activities, during highschool  that almost cost me my life. By the Mercy of Allah, I found an interest in serving people, healing myself, and doing things that involved community self determination,  hearing the voices of the often repressed and voiceless communities, justice for oppressed communities, and  projects that brought healing and justice.  Being involved in projects that served others really saved my life, and turned my outlook  toward more positive ways of doing things with people who shared the same outlook.
Years later, with the calling of serving people already within me, and by the Mercy of Allah  I became a Mother.
During my own pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period I witnessed what all families and mothers have been going through. From a whole diffferent persepctive and actual first hand experience.  The injustices that take place in regards to childbirth and family wellness; from the way Imprisoned Women have been forced to birth while in  shackles, to the lack of quality care given to Women with  low or no income insurances compared to Women who could afford insurance.  The facts that infant mortality is at a very high rate in Black, Brown, and poor communities, and the health and unity of families are deterioriating, there is so much to tackle!   These are signs of present systems failing the people just because they are not privileged, thats not right, so I want to contribute my skills to see this change.

The more I began to study the legacy of Black and African Midwives, like Shafia Monroe, Gladys Milton,  and Midwives like Ina May Gaskin...I knew this is what I needed to do. Many sisters in my community guided me and inspired me on this path, and in 2012 I completed a Full Circle Doula training. Since then I have learned and practiced the art of serving Mothers and their families throughout their pregnancy, birth and postpartum periods.
(Picture above: Me serving as a Doula and the wonderful mother and her newborn )
I want to help give all families  easy access to Quality and Safe Midwifery care; regardless of race, income, or religion.

The role of a midwife in our communities will be to make sure birthing mommas and their families are educated and informed about birth. We no longer want our families to be neglected and misinformed, rushed into unecessary surgical or medical procedures. We no longer want our families suffering due to inadequate prenatal care, and lack of nutritional mentoring. We want food preparation workshops, prenatal therapy, whole family health, fraternal and maternal healing, childbirth education, informed consent, and all educational information on maternal, fraternal, and neonatal wellbeing to be common sense again. We want to prevent this medical profiteering from taking advantage of us. We are doing this to see unnatural causes of maternal , infant and fraternal mortality disappear. Midwifery is one tool to gain healthier starts and legacies for our families.

Now, as a Student Midwife in a Nationally Accredited Midwifery Program through the Midwives College of Utah (MCU Distance Program) I need my community and people who care to see more Black Midwives in this world,  to please help me push through this financial hurdle.
I want to thank you for caring about this mission and contribuiting to this cause.

With all I have accomplished it would not be possible without the mercy of the Creator.
