Art For Fort McMurray Victims

Donation protected
Hello,

My name is Sarah George  and I am an artist currently living in Blackfalds, AB. I used to live in Fort McMurray and like many Albertans I have a lot of emotion around what has been happening with the Alberta Wildfires there in the last few weeks with the fires. I want to do something to give back.

We were already considering a gofundme account to cover the costs of some art to be donated to an Alberta Art Museum, or used in a way that would benefit Albertans when this tragedy occured so we thought this could be a wonderful way to do something to help at least one family in this critical time.

In 2002 I was part of a project that created a historical book for Rocky Mountain House about the forts there. We spent many hours painstakenly recreating the forts in sketches by studying the written words of explorers and by using modern archetects and professionals to study the landmarks left behind. The book was called Where The River Brought Them and it was a tremendous success. The pieces brought me national recognition and led to a later commission to paint a piece that was given to the Queen of England as payment for rent of Ruperts land.

I still have the original historical collection of the forts. It is worth about $15,000 for a collector to purchase. It includes the original framed forts, 4 more sketches that are matted, and the original sketch book.

So this is how we will do this. The first $10,000 raised will cover the cost of the art. I will give up $5000 of it's worth as a contribution to the fires. Every dollar over $10,000 will go to a family directly effected by the fires in Fort McMurray. You can send their stories to my daughter Kerry George  owner of the CIBN  and the Calgary Business Network at [email redacted] who has created a committee to read them and select a recipient who will receive $10,000 from our collections. We will make an announcement on or before May 30th who will be the lucky recipient. That is the first $20,000 raised. If we raise more than that, we will select another family from the entries to recieve another $10,000. We will run this campaign for 30 days and see what we can raise. If it ends with anything less than the next $10,000 the remainder will go to a charity that is directly related to the victims in the area. We are considering the Red Cross but are open to your suggestions as well.

This means a lot to me to be able to make an impact. So many families have lost their homes. Anyone who has ever lived in Fort McMurray or visited there knows the uniqueness of the community and how difficult it can be in the boom and bust economy to make it. Insurances will cover some of the losses but some will be underinsured. Memories and photos are lost. We can only imagine the heartache. Let's do something special that makes a difference. I would be so grateful to be a part of this and I know you would too.

I think that if you give a significant amount you should receive something as well to remember this by. So anyone giving over $200 will recieve a set of art cards with the forts on them as a "Thank You" gift. These are valued at $45.

If you give $500 you will recieve a print of the painting "Passage Denied" valued at $150.

If you contribute $1000 you will recieve a print of "Passage Denied" and 4 framed art cards that are worth an additional $200.

The person who contributes the most will recieve the original collection. You can keep it, or donate it to a museum or gallery of your choice. You will also get a print of "Passage Denied" and a set of gift cards to have something to keep, in case you want to give the collection away.

This is a great way to help out those who have been affected by the Alberta Wildfires.
