April the Giraffe & Family Fund

$84,265 of $50k goal

Raised by 2,541 people in 27 days
AP
Animal Adventure Park  HARPURSVILLE, NY

For those of you wishing to sponsor and support our giraffes; April, Oliver, and their expected calf - here is a safe and secure way to make your contributions.

The funds generated will be used to offset their annual care at our facility.  Anything generated, above and beyond the goal, will be dedicated to improvements of the new Giraffe Encounter Deck, Shade Stations in the exhibit, Energy Efficient upgrades to their barn, and the installation of a permanent Giraffe Cam at Animal Adventure.

This campaign is not to be confused with the baby giraffe naming campaign that will be launched post birth and gender reveal.

This page has been launched to satisfy the overwhelming demand for a safe platform for individuals - near and far - to be able to sponsor our Giraffes.  Please note, we are a for profit organization, and your conributions are documented as gifts to the facility.  The contribution is not tax deductible.

We were hesitant to even launch this initiative, but the overwhelming generosity has demanded a platform in which to give.  So, please, give away.

Sincerely,

The Animal Adventure Park Team

Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts here at Animal Adventure! Today, YOU, our sponsors, have met and surpassed the annual budget demands for our giraffe care!

This means that all heating, feed, labor, enrichment items, and exhibit/housing maintenance has been sponsored by those that have contributed.

Any and all funds past the original goal set, will be applied to further improvements for the giraffes, and the possible addition of a permanent Giraffe Yard Cam .

Again, Thank YOU!

Thank you to the many of you that have sponsored Oliver and April thus far; truly overwhelming.

Your contribution sponsorship simply off sets their expenses for the facility; lightening the financial overhead.

This is the legitimate page for their sponsorship; and the only one.

To know this is the legitimate account; it can be easily be verified in our YouTube Live Giraffe Cam page in the info/description area. Also, our Facebook page does post about this page - once.

Giraffes are certainly not like humans. Their babies don't live in their parent's basement till the age of 39. They go make their way in the world.

I wish people would read BEFORE they comment. The calf will move on to another facility to start a breeding program there. We cannot retain offspring, as it would lead to incestuous mating and undermine the genetics of the program and species. It's best for the calf to be removed. How many of you complaining about the calf being removed have a cat or a dog? They were removed from their mother!

I have learned more about giraffes, and viewing each animal as a specific individual animal and not just a generic "giraffe" more in the past week than in my prior 50 years. If zoos and animal parks did not exist, many of us would not learn in depth and detail about them, and few of us would ever have the time and money to be able to see them in their "natural" habitat. I really think we need to remember that many animals DO NOT have idyllic life experiences in their natural habitats as they are often the victims of predators, natural disasters, and the biggest predator of all... mankind. Here we have an opportunity to educate ourselves and others about these beautiful creatures, and are given an opportunity to help replenish what is already vulnerable and endangered. If this is not the means by which any one of us as individuals chooses to support the protection and proliferation of this or any other species, that is fine, do what you can they way you feel led. But it does not help the situation any to choose to belittle those who DO feel this is a valuable conservation and educational effort. No one person can do all for all animals, humans, and causes, but we can each do what we can how we can. I applaud AAP for generating more interest worldwide in giraffes in one week than I am sure many millions of us combined have done in our lifetimes. Baby animals are taken from their parents and rehomed all the time!! Animals, are wonderful and amazing as they are, do not always have the same emotional and cognitive actions and reactions humans do, and it is unfair to project onto them those traits. I once had a mother and daughter cat who were accidentally separated for ONE WEEK and the mother cat rejected her daughter when reunited. But to come on a site that is raising money and awareness for these loved and well taken care-of animals and argue with people does nothing to better anyone or anything. Send your dollars wherever you want, but best not to argue with the many here who have united in a common love for this beautiful giraffe and are all eagerly awaiting her baby's birth.

@Pj Walker, thank you! Re-homing this calf is the best option in order to control inbreeding, I mean at least they don't slaughter it as the one zoo did over seas. This is what happens, it happens all over the place, for profit or not, it is what has to be done. Also, anyone who has an issue with it, I really hope you don't have a cat or dog in your home, because guess what you mean ol human you, YOU also ripped an animal away from their momma. Just sayin!

@ Sarah and Dawn, The calf needs to be rehomed due to potential in-breeding that could happen. They wouldn't want Oliver to bred his offspring or April to get bred by her offspring. Please understand if they had the room they would love to keep the calf. There will be a special selection process with much deliberation as to the perfect fit for where the calf will be going. They do not know where the previous calves were sent as she had had her last calf in 2013 at another facility. I don't understand why you would think it's "taken away from it's mother" when eventually we all grow up and move on! Best of luck AAP, so happy to have been thru this journey with you!

Sarah Hathaway Animals are not like people. They do not keep their offspring with them longer than necessary. When a juvenile is old enough to be on it's own, the mother leaves it to be on it's own. They do not become life long family like humans do. Rehoming the calf will not put the mother into some sort of depression. Unlike humans, animals are programmed to let go of their offspring once their job of parenting is done.

Kellie who commented I wonder if someone set up a camera of a poor woman in Africa about to give birth and at risk of starving to death that so many people would donate and watch?...... People can and will donate to the things that move them. Many people donate often to animals over humans as the animals themselves have no way to support themselves as humans do. So why don't you donate to that starving women in africa and keep your attitude to yourself. The rest of the humans who choose to help support the animals of the earth will continue to do so with happy hearts.

If you watch the wild life videos on youtube, youll see that many calves die because the mother walk away from them to wander trying to feed themselves or roam. Other animals such as lions eventually get them if mom is not close by. Its not going to put April in a huge depression to be away from the calf. Its all apart of animal nature. Remember eventually your puppy or cat was taken away from its mother. In this case, the calf will go on to grow, live safely and one day have a baby of its own which wont be bred from relations with its mother/father etc. Im thankful to have spent so many days being able to view this beautiful process. Im also thankful to have met so many amazing people across the globe caring about life & nature in all its glory vs politics.

May God bless your work and provide abundance of resources to care for your animals. May this experience enlighten the world that conservation actions must be put into place to prevent giraffe extinction, as well as, the obliteration of many other creatures on land and in the sea. April has a much greater purpose than having a calf....by bringing the entire world into her home, we are not only learning about a giraffe's food choices, play, behaviors, birthing, relationship with each other and with humans. We are learning about extinction, something that will effect the entire world. We are learning about patience, kindness, generosity, as well as, the lack of such exhibited by people. We are learning about communication among strangers, good and the not-so-good. In such, the greatest lesson of all being taught here.....for regional & global unification......we must RESPECT each other and the creatures that inhabit this world, otherwise chaos will destroy peaceful and productive living for everyone. All this education, provided by one little giraffe in her barn in New York.....imagine what millions of unified people could accomplish !!! One little giraffe providing so much hope for the entire world. God brought April to the world to teach us lessons. Question is.....are we listening ? Bless you April and Animal Adventure Park! ❤️
