In the 21st century, we know more about the benefits of supporting the local community and the benefits it brings to educating our children, than at any other point in history. We know that children benefit from music lessons, emotional support, additional group work for high achievers and support those who need more input in order to access the curriculum. We know that many parents depend on wrap around care in the form of an extended school day, in order to be able to fulfill their work commitments. We know that our growing elderly population lack company and space to meet. We also know that in these times of austerity, any additional facility to support the youth of our community will be of huge benefit.
Therefore, we have a bold plan to build a community room at Anstey Junior School, for a  wide selection of uses, across the school and community.

Our building will prove a melting pot that will span generations and transcend social circles. A space for the community to use and enjoy that goes way beyond the confines of our school.
Our local community needs access to a space that would offer small rooms for 1:1 and group sessions and counselling, together with a larger hall area to run clubs, training, talks and meetings. Our proposal includes a kitchen area and fully accessible toilet facilities.

The room would also support Alton families by providing before and after school care along side school holiday provision.  During the school day, this multi purpose space will enable us to continue the fantastic one to one work with so many children - currently this takes place in corridors across the school. We have even converted our stationary cupboard into a learning hub to utilize every last space across the school building. We have music lessons taking place daily in school, and would love a dedicated area for the Arts. Additionally, we would like to offer the space for a Seniors Group, it is widely recognised that loneliness is a huge cause of concern amongst the elderly. Our proposal would, bring aim to address this, providing a communal space for Alton’s older generation.

By housing our senior group within a school building we will, inevitably encourage the cohabitation of young and old within our community. We see this being mutually beneficial from all sides. Our young children will be exposed to the wisdom and stories of the elderly. At the same time, the venerable members of the community will be reinvigorated, by the youth and enthusiasm of the children. From arts programs to community gardens, there are many ways that different generations can come together as a team.

We want to have more space to invite our families and our community to engage in a range of activities; Our building will, therefore be a proactive way of providing support for all ages of the community. Our highly skilled teachers and SENCo frequently  run courses for other teaching staff and parents, this space will enable them to share their knowledge with others more often. We are often being asked for room hire from external organisations including; family support workers, sports clubs, holiday clubs and the Scouting community.

Contributing to our appeal for an additional building, will change many people’s lives, both in the short and long term. This expansion will not just affect the lives of our immediate school community. It will bring the wider community together with a shared space that they can use. The building will become a legacy of solidarity and community spirit for years to come.  We have received planning permission for a modular building to be attached to the school to cover the needs of our community. We aim to have this building in place, at the latest by January 2021, and are desperately seeking additional funding to ensure that all our children and our community have the space to grow.
