Annabelle Cilman will be 96 on February 19, 2016. Except for macular degeneration she is in perfect health physically, but she has severe Alzheimer's disease and needs to live in a care facility for her safety and the safety of those around her. Currently, she lives in a wonderful place in Concord, California.
Like many people who worked all their lives but never expected to live this long, Annabelle has a fixed income from a combination of social security benefits and pensions. She has no other financial resources. Her monthly income is $1,284, while the cost of Annabelle's care is $2,200 per month. We have dug deep into our resources to be able to meet her living expenses during the past year, but our circumstances make it impossible for us to provide for her going forward. Our goal is to raise enough to support her for one year at her current residence while we seek other solutions to this heartbreaking dilemma.
We are exploring other strategies, such as reducing her income by $76 in order for her to qualify for public assistance. Government programs operate at a glacial pace, and once she qualifies, we will still need to find a placement for her. In the meantime, we need to pay.
Annabelle still has her sweet disposition. She charms her caregivers and is very social with her fellow residents. She still makes the Best Dressed list. We are grateful that she usually recognizes us, or pretends to. But the woman who made the Dean's list when she got her Bachelor's degree in art at age 75 cannot carry on a coherent conversation, does not know she is in California, does not know the purpose of a pencil, and can no longer write her name.
