Donate for Alyx
It's hard to find the words to describe Alyx Shea. He was so many things to so many different people. He was loved by all, and has touched the lives of countless people.
On Monday, the unthinkable happened. He stopped breathing. Unknown to everyone, he had a growth in his throat that cut off his airway. His wonderful girlfriend, Hayley, performed CPR until the EMTs arrived. He was rushed to Tucson Medical Center where they did everything they could to save his life. Unfortunately, he went too long without oxygen.
On Wednesday afternoon a CT scan confirmed that the damage to Alyx's brain was too much for him to survive. Alyx will likely be going off of life support on Friday, when he will make his last kind gesture to the world. Alyx is a registered organ donor, and his organs could go on to save the lives of five more people. Just like Alyx - giving to the very end.
Over the last few days, dozens, if not hundreds, or people have come to see Alyx in the hospital. He hasn't been alone at all since he arrived in the ICU at 8am Monday morning. The support for Alyx and his family is almost overwhelming and we can't begin to thank everyone enough. It is so great to know how many people loved and cared for Alyx.
While we do not anticipate many medical bills, we are asking for donations. They will go to pay what medical bills we have, as well as make sure there is money for all of Alyx's family to come to Tucson for the memorial.
Remaining money will go to support the memorial and related final expenses.
Details about the final arrangements are currently be worked out. We are also setting up places for people to share stories and photos of Alyx. Thank you for all your love and support.
Some interesting blood trivia:
1. Alyx, known for his positivity, had a B+ (be positive) blood type.
2. The process by which blood banks are able to retrieve double the amount of red blood cells is known as "Alyx," as a couple blood donors found out today.
Saturday was a beautiful day. From what I remember, anyway. Very blurry. I think I saw everyone for 2.3 seconds. You were all so wonderful, and I think Alyx would have been well-pleased with us for having a celebration instead of a funeral. And he would have been thrilled with Murph's corned beef.
You have all been So. Wonderful. Especially the Hall Family, and especially Kingfisher.
Some of us will be able to move on sooner, and there's no shame in that. Some of us will carry it with us forever, and there's just nothing we can do about that. Move on however you are able.
One thing I do know is how grateful and proud Alyx is of you all for how you supported us and loved us (and still do). Hayley and Dorie and Cameron and I, and all of the rest of our families have rarely felt alone. Your love for Alyx, and by extension, us, has been a nothing short of amazing.
Thank you. Thank you for your financial support, but mostly for your emotional support.
There are several more events in the works to honor Alyx, and I will let you know about them as they occur. If you're too burned out and can't take any more of this-- we understand. We're all tired. It's okay if you can't do more right now. Alyx understands and loves you and just wants you to be okay. And to eat Chipotle.
Alyx's Mom Always
It's like you sensed it.
Thank you thank you THANK YOU. All of your generous donations have enabled so many of Alyx's family and friends who live out of state, who would not have been able to attend his memorial party otherwise, to be here on Saturday. I know they would thank you, too.
The fund has been completely expended for its intended purpose-- travel and memorial expenses (sorry, no sno-cone machine or cotton candy machine), so there's nothing to pass on to Ronald McDonald House.
BUT! No worries! Tomorrow night Kingfisher and Bluefin are donating 25% of proceeds to Ronald McDonald House, in Alyx's name. Not only that, they are catering Alyx's memorial at no charge to us, and even added on Murph's famous corned beef, which was Alyx's favorite. Jeff and Murph, your generosity and love amazes us. And makes me cry, but in the good way. Hope to see tons of you at Kingfisher (or Bluefin!) tomorrow. We'll be there.
So all you have to do now is show up to the party! It starts at 12, but come by anytime, open-house style. Kid-friendly, with activities and things to play with and a pinata for children of all ages. There will be tons of food from Kingfisher and baked goods from Nadine's, beer and wine for the grown-ups, other stuff not worth drinking for the kids. Kleenex in abundance.
All are welcome. Don't be shy about showing up. I want to look back and remember a half acre packed with smiling faces, laughing about Alyx stories.
See you then.
All my love,
Much love to you.
So much love to you all.
Jackie, I love you guys. I've been thinking about you since I heard on Thursday. Love to you all.
The caption on this picture, "Alyx loved hugging signs," made me smile. I just about KNOW that caption came from Jackie --either when she saw it on Liz's blog, or because Jackie said that to Alyx when she saw the picture. Or Alyx said it himself. Because that caption is totally Jackie, as was he.
