Allentown Warming Station
Everlasting Life Ministries is operating the Allentown Warming Station shelter for homeless people this winter. The Warming Station (WS) provides a clean, safe, basic shelter to people in urgent need. These are homeless men, women and sometimes children, with no place to sleep for a variety of reasons: other shelters being full, personal crisis, immediate and unexpected homelessness, addiction issues, mental illness and others. The WS was busy right away in early November, straining and exceeding the 38-bed capacity. More staff was needed right away. With money raised here, we will add more staffing to work with people one-on-one and help homeless people connect with resources, so they can leave the shelter.
The 38-bed Warming Station operates from November 8, 2016 through April 30, 2017. The facility is open 7 days a week, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. (overnight only). The estimated budget is about $87,000, barely enough to provide the essential services for the 173 days planned, at a nightly expense of about $15 a bed.
It is located at Fountain Park, 1000 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Allentown.
