Hello, my name is Alex Treloar. I am a Life Scout with Troop 8 in Sawkill, NY , and I am currently working to achieve the highest rank in scouting; the rank of Eagle Scout. In order to do this, I had to choose a project that benefited my community and then organize and carry out that project.
I wanted to look for an organization that supports a cause that I am passionate about. Since I have been vegetarian for the past six years, I decided to approach local animal sanctuaries to see what work they needed done and eventually settled on building a blue stone pathway for the Catskill Animal Sanctuary (CAS). The pathway would connect the existing blue stone patio at the Homestead to the front entrance, meandering around the side of the building. The Homestead is a beautifully renovated 1813 farmhouse that serves as a Bed & Breakfast for guests visiting the Sanctuary, providing revenue for the farm. The pathway would provide convenience for the guests visiting CAS and make staying there more comfortable.
Located in the New York’s Hudson Valley, Catskill Animal Sanctuary is a 110-acre haven for horses and farmed animals rescued from cruelty and neglect. In addition to emergency rescue, CAS provides innovative programs that educate the public about the sentience of farm animals, and the devastating impacts of agribusiness and institutionalized cruelty on animals, people, and the planet.
Since 2001, CAS has rescued over 3,500 animals, and has worked in tandem with law enforcement to bring animal abusers to justice. Founder and President Kathy Stevens blogs for the Huffington Post and is the author of the highly acclaimed books, Where the Blind Horse Sings and Animal Camp.
The total cost for the stone, excavation and incidentals is approximately $1,500. I have raised some of this with a recent vegetarian Italian Dinner. I am asking for your help in paying for this project for a worthy organization and to help me achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. Thank you for any help you can give.
