A Dollar A Smile

Donativo protegido
I am a 7th grade student at NCCL School in Newark, DE. Our school is doing a project called the Big Give where each student is given $50 and asked to make a difference with the money. For my project I have decided to help Nemours Palliative Care.

100,000 kids under 15 die from cancer worldwide. Almost 250 kids die a day.

Even though I can’t change the number of kids who die, I do hope that I can raise awareness. Although death is a difficult topic to talk about, especially when you have kids of your own, it is also a very important topic to talk about. Even though it’s hard for the kids going through hospice to think that they had such a short life and that they’ll never see their friends again, it’s also very hard on the parents and the people around them who watch the whole process.

I chose to do my Big Give project to help kids in hospice care because one of my friends who I’ve known for a long time, has been battling cancer for three years now. He was doing well until a couple of months ago when he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He was able to stay at home with his family because of hospice care.  We just found out that he passed away. I want to do this project in honor of him and his family.

One of my goals is to buy copies of two different books to donate to children and their families who are in palliative care: "The Next Place" by Warren Hanson and "The Invisible String" by Patrice Karst.

These books help families talk about the most difficult thing that many of them will ever experience. Research shows that parents who speak openly with their children about death do not regret the decision, whereas families who do not discuss an expected death often regret it. These books give parents and children a way to talk about what will happen next during the end of life.

Please contribute to my project and help me reach my goal of donating 33 copies of each book in honor of my friend.  Thank you!
