Cammie Maturin   NEW IBERIA, LA
My name is Cammie Maturin. I am a resident of New Iberia, Louisiana, and a former colleague and friend of Jena and Ali – two of the surviving victims in the tragic Lafayette cinema shooting. As acting president of one of Iberia parish’s local professional organizations for educators, the Iberia Association of Educators, I have set up this account to collect donations to help Ali and Jena defray the costs of any medical expenses that won’t be covered under their insurance. School starts in just two weeks, so funds will also go toward assisting them recoup any wages lost during their recovery absence. The Iberia Association of Educators will collect all donations and divide the funds among the two women. We will be sure to present them with each donor’s name, as well as the amount donated so that they are aware of the love and support pouring in from across the country.

Please share this, as we want to reach the goal set. Thank you for your support and donations.

Excellent insurance?!?! It costs over $700 a month... we teachers work all school year, plus during the summer, to make sure our students have the best education possible. While many of yall are tanning your toes on a beach, many teachers are working on new lesson plans for the upcoming year, preparing interesting, fun lessons that will engage students, and getting our classrooms ready for the upcoming year. We are also sitting at inservices, meetings, etc. Please don't assume that these ladies have state-of-the-art medical insurance, money falling out of their purses, and a ton of free time in which to recover. If you don't want to donate, DON'T, but don't come on here insulting their career choices and assuming they have it made in the shade. Just know this, Karen, when your child comes to school, WE keep them safe, WE love them, WE teach them, WE hug them, WE eat lunch with them, WE spend every waking moment worrying about them, hoping that they have dinner each night and breakfast each morning. When a teacher jumps in front of a bullet meant for your child, sister, brother, parent, friend, uncle, aunt, etc., maybe you will be grateful... or maybe you'll think the teacher did it just for some money and attention.... but we teachers know that it was done because our first instinct is to protect.

Why I donated. My daughter, Tabby Touchet, was one of the Grand employees who tried to help you... We are praying for your recovery. So many scenarios run through our head of "what if" and thank God you are both okay and you thought to activate the fire alarm. The employees of the Grand are not trained to respond to a shooting in a theater, but they are trained to respond to a fire, so that was the best thing anyone could have done. I am certain it saved lives because of it. And I am grateful... I am not a parent mourning the loss of my child today.

Just an FYI...the victims of last night's shooting are eligible for Crime Victim Reparations (CVR) that will help pay for medical expenses, loss of earnings or support, and even mental health counseling (up to $10,000, or $25,000 for victims who suffer total permanent disability). CVR will also help with funeral expenses for the deceased victims. CVR is a wonderful program our State has in place to assist innocent victims of crime financially. More information can be found at http://lcle.la.gov/programs/cvr.asp.

Those of you thinking this is a scam either don't know names of victims because you don't know them or don't live here. Some have been identified but families have the right to keep their names out of the media if they choose to. This campaign is on the AP wire by the way, that's proof enough for those not close to the situation to know it's very much legit.

If it were any other profession, nobody would say anything negative, but because they are teachers, they are somehow undeserving??? It burns my backside that these teachers probably used training in case of a school shooting, and saved many lives, yet they are criticized because they "have summers off" and "get paid with taxpayer money." Lots of people get paid with taxpayer money and don't have to put up with the disrespect and bullshit from the general public. Karen and Laurel, be glad that your sorry asses weren't in the theater that night, and be grateful that someone there knew how to alert the authorities and prevent more deaths. Be glad that there are people out there (most of whom are paid with public money) who wouldn't hesitate to act to save YOUR life. You should be ashamed and thanking these ladies.

First I want to say I am very sorry that y'all are dealing with such a terrible tragedy, my thoughts and prayers are with y'all, the families and other victims. Now my rant...if you don't want to donate, can't donate then don't it's not a problem but please don't make this out to be a bad thing the victims have been through enough and they don't need to read all the negative comments and made to feel like it wad their fault or that they are a problem here. If it was you or your family how would you feel if you read the bad comments or if it was your daughter, sister, niece and they read it. Please people we as a close nit community need to pray for one another build each other back up not tear each other down. If you don't have nothing nice or grateful to say then shut the hell up. I'm done here. I hope you ladies recovery fast your students are going to be lost without y'all.

It really makes my skin crawl that people are so "jealous" that teachers have summer off so they don't deserve this. I am also a teacher. My school let out June 20 on June 22 I went into training for a week and a half, then went into teaching summer school for 3 week. I am now in the process of prepping for the school year and getting my classroom ready for the year. As teachers we do trainings for things like this and what these women did was a complete act of courage. And yes you may only get one week off and "pay for you insurance" (by the way I pay for my insurance and have an autoimmune disorder which my insurance doesn't cover the medical plan my dr wants to use.) teachers only get a week off too when they actually take a vacation they then go back to preparing for the year. So when you run your mouth please think about what you have to say is fact, and also you wouldn't have a job or any skills IF IT WASN'T FOR A TEACHER!!!!

We do not have excellent insurance in Iberia Parish Schools. The school board does not provide the insurance because it was a tremendous cost to the system's budget. So we acquire insurance from company that provides us with the minimum coverage with high premiums. Our medical deductible is $1500.00 with a large list of what is NOT covered. Needless to say, the days missed from work will most likely be deducted from their pay in order to pay a substitute teacher. I love my job and the system but it is just what happens. So all the donations will not be wasted; Cammie Maturin and the Iberia Association of Educators will make certain of its intentions.

Just because the names are not released all over the media, does not mean that those of us who live here and know them personally do not know the names. As citizens of this city, and as friends of the victims we find out before it goes viral all over the news who they are. Just as if my father was shot, trust me I would know before the rest of the country. So simply because we know before you does not make this a scam
