"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." - John F. Kennedy
I posted that quote on facebook for Thanksgiving. With all the misery around the world, I feel like a liar ~ posting empty words that I don't live by.
Over 4,000 refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan, Eritrea, and others, live in Calais, France (aka the Jungle) fleeing war and poverty in their countries. Neither France nor England (which is a short ferry ride away) will take them in. French authorities have detained refugees, and threatened violence against them for settling too close to the city. The refugees live in tents and limited meals are provided by soup kitchens and donations.
To reach the Jungle -- a makeshift city of tents and endless tensions -- refugees must first navigate treacherous waters, hike over merciless terrain and otherwise elude border patrols. "And at the end of such an arduous journey, there awaits not a rainbow but, rather, a political and social limbo that essentially denies them the right to leave to try to start over in another European city." For too many, they can't go back and they can't move on!
The refugee crisis at Calais is monumental and winter is here. Thousands of people endure the bitter cold with only flimsy tents and shacks for shelter. "With both the temperatures and the political climate in Europe towards refugees growing cold, the light on the horizon is rapidly dimming..."
I want my words to mean something. I will travel to Calais December 11 - 17.
I will be funding my own travel expenses so all of the money you donate will have a direct impact on these desperate, displaced people. Please consider any amount and know that it will directly benefit the refugees stuck in Calais without resources.
