Lombok Earthquake Relief Fund

$12,497 of $15,000 goal

Raised by 193 people in 9 months
Created August 5, 2018

Our friends and their communities in Indonesia need your help now. At the time of writing this, a third earthquake (magnitude 7.0) in a week just hit Indonesia’s Lombok Island.

The Community Development Centre in Sembalun  village on Lombok need donations to distribute water, food, clothes, sleeping mats/tents and medical supplies for those badly affected.

The first strong earthquake hit Lombok on Sunday 28th July, another on the 3rd August and another, the largest so far, at the time of writing this, August 5th.

Hundreds of aftershocks have been recorded and thousands of houses have been damaged or destroyed. Video of villages badly hit.

In Sembalun, as elsewhere in North Lombok, everyone is living in very basic refuge camps, with 65% of houses damaged or destroyed and continuous aftershocks making it unsafe to return to homes. This will be their living situation for the foreseeable future.

Money donated will be bank transferred to the Community Development Centre in Sembalun, Lombok. Food, water, clothes, sleeping mats, tents and medical supplies will be bought for those in need.

The Community Development Centre have also been driving out supplies to other isolated and badly affected villages in the region.

Donations are needed to contribute to their efforts, both short-term and long-term, to aid with distributing supplies, improving living conditions in the camps and trauma healing.

We are a group of Australians who have lived, volunteered and visited with and for the Community Development Centre in Sambalun. We were there as recently as this April on a trip with CERES Global. We are concerned friends and community members from Melbourne.

A little goes a long way, so please help with what donations you can.

Thank you to everyone who has been so generous in sending money to help those affected by the continuous earthquakes on Lombok island over the past few months.

Our friends at the Sembalun Community Development Centre have been helping their communities with these funds for immediate needs such as temporary shelter.

The SCDC are now focusing their efforts on rebuilding and longer-term planning, and are in the process of planning to rebuild their centre, a space for community, particularly the younger generation, to come together and thrive, that was severely damaged in the earthquakes. Along with CERES Global, we hope to rebuild the centre with a sustainable design, and create a space to demonstrate and share ideas and solutions to live well and protect our natural resources, such as implementing waste management and organic farming systems. This project is also aimed to help with trauma healing and bringing a positive focus back into the community.

Donated funds will now also go towards this project.

The SCDC have recently purchased 300 tarps to make semi-permanent shelter (as pictured below) through the rainy season for those with houses too damaged to live in, these will be arriving within the next few days.

The SCDC have also purchased water tanks for areas where the water pumps have been damaged, and will be refilling them as needed, until water access is restored.

They are also in the process of conducting village wide surveys in order to better assess the needs of those living in the refuge camps.

Thank you so much for everyone that has donated already, you are helping our friends in Lombok help their community.

We have now sent a total of $7000.00 AUD over to the Sembalun Community Development Centre. They have been able to put down a deposit ($2000.00) to purchase 300 tents and tarps to help come of those who will not have homes to live in over the coming rainy season which starts soon, and will be able to pay the outstanding amount ($5000.00) that is currently being transferred.

CERES Global will continue to work with our friends in Lombok at the SCDC, to help with immediate relief. We will continue to fundraise, in the hope that we can help with longer-term, sustainable development plans for the Sembalun community.

Volunteers at the Sembalun Community Development Centre in north-east Lombok have been driving out 6600 litres of water a day to badly affected villages, in east and north-east Lombok. 3 trucks have been delivering drinking water twice a day to areas that have no access to water.

With aid efforts predominantly focused in northern regions that were the worst affected, other badly affected villages in the east are still struggling to get basic necessities.

The full amount of government aid publicly announced has not reached all areas, volunteers and local organisations have been working tirelessly to fill the gaps or help with logistics.

The Sembalun CDC have distributed hundreds of kilograms of local vegetables to other badly affected and often isolated villages in the area.

Please donate to help out those on the ground working hard to ensure continued access to food, water and emergency supplies.
