Recording Leaving CLE: A Song Cycle
As a musical theater composer, my creative focus is collaborating on musical stories with bookwriter-lyricists and setting their words to music. Last year, I re-purposed a hat and wrote a book of poetry and multi-genre text called Leaving CLE poems of nomadic dispersal, published by Miami University Press, a book inspired by my family's complicated reverse migration story from Ohio and the Northeast to post Jim Crow-era Alabama. After generating all of this text, the words started calling me to set them to music. I heeded the call! Now Leaving CLE is also two solid hours of scored, sung and performed music. It is a song cycle from my depths, which I have been performing with my band, Namaroon. Funds will be used for recording studio time, recording engineering, mix and mastering costs, musicians' fees, reheasal studio rental, score copying and CD and vinyl press. I have scored the music for piano, keyboards, voice ensemble, woodwinds, violin, guitar, bass, drums, percussion and turntables.
I have dedicated my arts advocacy to promoting new and diverse voices in music, theater and poetry. I am deeply grateful for your help in launching my own long overdue "soul" project.
I'm really looking forward to getting back to recording in 2019. I postponed for minute to work on two composing projects. Leaving CLE song cycle is about half finished. I'm happy about the way things are coming together and truly excited for you to hear these musicians on this work! Your kind support truly helped me to jumpstart this thing for real. I can't thank all of you enough, but I will try. Gratitude abounds.
Peace, Love & Higher Purpose,
Here's the update on my project: Things are definitely happening! I've recorded most of the instrumental parts for 12 tunes and will record at least 3 more for this album. There's lots to do. I'm completely psyched about the progress so far. I'm excited for you to hear it!
I hope to release Leaving CLE: Songs of Nomadic Dispersal in late 2018. Look out for your invite to the listening party album:)
I'm not a natural at crowdsourcing. Those of you who know me well know this. I am truly heartened, amazed and grateful that you supported this work. I'll definitely pay it forward by helping to fund up and coming artists. That's a promise.
Best of Everything to All of You,
Keep me up on your projects,
In the self-determined spirit of Kujichagulia (and with a little help from my friends,)I had my first recording sessions for Leaving CLE Song Cycle. With such wonderful musicians on the project, things are really coming together. I'm excited about beginnings and love every minute of digging into this work! I am truly appreciative of each of you.
This campaign will be up through the recording and mixing-mastering phase. Thanks for spreading the word.
Do let me know
of your readings/ performances
