Trees Please!

Can you imagine living in poverty without access to quality food? Can you imagine most of the people in your neighbor hood suffering from malnutrition?

Do you know what a food desert is?

My name is Jay Seibold, and I am a graduate student At Florida Atlantic University. My project , Trees Please, is a Service Learning Project for a class this semester, and I could truly use YOUR help...

According to the USDA, food deserts are defined as urban neighborhoods and rural towns without ready access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food. Instead of supermarkets and grocery stores, these communities may have no food access or are served only by fast food restaurants and convenience stores that offer few healthy, affordable food options. The lack of access contributes to a poor diet and can lead to higher levels of obesity and other diet-related diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease.

There are a number of communities in South Florida that are considered to be food deserts, especially in Broward County. Many members of these communities are in poor health, and since I am in a position to make  a difference, I will. But it's easier said than done.

My vision for the project was to solicit donations (fruit trees) from local businesses/nurseries and plant them in community gardens in the food deserts within Broward County. If I can secure quality trees that supply the types of fruit in demand, then 2-3 local organizations dedicated to grass roots community health work (in the Sistrunk Corridor) are willing to let me plant the trees in their gardens, tend to them, and allow the local citizens to access the fresh produce! However, I am not getting the support from the community I need!

After soliciting for donations for a few weeks, I am sad to state that I was turned down by 32 businesses. I need to make this project come to fruition before the middle of November, or I will have to abandon such a worthwhile effort, so I figured I would try this avenue: Will you help me secure a solid garde in my class; moreover, will you help me provide quality food for those in need?

Will you donate $$$ so I can buy fruit trees to plant in impoverished neighborhoods in Southern Florida?

Fruit trees regularly cost $40-$200. Thinking about it in basic terms, I would say that 1 tree makes the project work, 5 trees makes it a success, and 10 trees make a difference...

I am a huge advocate for Service Learning Projects, so I jumped at the opportunity to make a difference. I truly appreciate and embrace the chance to have such an impact on local communities, and words cannot express how grateful I would be for your support!!
