Save the Oark Swinging Bridge

Donation protected
On Monday December 28th the swinging bridge washed out. It is located 25 miles north of Clarksville Arkansas in between Oark and Catalpa.

The bridge is a state land mark and has been featured in commercials, magazines, and other media to advertise the state of Arkansas. It has brought much tourism and income to a part of the state that does not have much. It is a place that people all over the state and country love to come and see.

This bridge is the only way in and out for my mother Cathie Brown, and other family members. They are essentially trapped on the farm without this bridge. When ever the mulberry river is down enough it can be crossed by truck. However, because of the flood this isn’t possible.

With each flood my mother’s land is eroded more and more. The river is changing course and it needs to be redirected back to its original place so that my mother will still have land. It has eroded so much that it has washed out the tree that has held the swinging bridge for years.

My family needs help. This is beyond our control and financial capabilities. The Arkansas Stream team has a project planned to redirect the river but they do not have the funds at the time. They need an estimated 45,000 to complete this task. I believe that if enough people come together we can get this done and save my mother’s land and will be able to bring back the bridge. If the land isn’t there there can’t be a swinging bridge ever again.

From my Mother Cathie Brown's Facebook,

“I guess by now all of you know that the swinging bridge washed out today.I am so hurt on the inside I have tried to hold myself together about it. Its our way to get basic needs in here like food be able to go to the Dr.s. Its our way to the rest of the world. Its also loved by everyone that comes to enjoy the country. Its also a place people bring there families to spend a day swimming and a way for my family to come see me. My grand daughter Sammye is getting married this weekend and my way went away today.

The Arkansas Stream team has a project planned when they can get the money needed to do this project. Since the land that is in the water is still considered my land the project can't be federally funded They have raised so far 20,000 plus thousand to do the project they need 45 more thousand to do it and there is little hope that any swinging bridge will last for long since the land will not be there for a bridge to come to. Cammie is calling ch.5 hoping that they will pick up the story and setting up a bank account at Arvest for" Save The Swinging Bridge" just maybe together we can save the bridge. By the way i have a copy of the project right here and the project is costing 62.795.75 :let us Pull together and make this happen please repost with a picture of the bridge.Love Cathie and Kelsey we will see you when we can We are stranded till the river goes down.”

I haven’t been able to set up an account at Arvest but I am setting up a go fund me account. We will get the bridge rebuilt but we cannot do it with out the people knowing and having everyones help. This bridge is loved not only by family but people all over the nation. Please help us spread the word so something can be done. We can’t do this alone.
