Frankie Knuckles Tribute Mural

Back in May 2014, a group of artist came together to honor the late Frankie Knuckles.  A mural went up on a rooftop along the Blue Line in the Logan Square neighborhood.  For 4 hot and grueling days, these gentlemen worked under the sun to complete this project.  It was done out of love for a city, community and culture grieving at the loss of their hero.  It was done because it had to be.  It was done completely out of pocket by these artist, with no sponsorship or financial support. It was not necessary.  It had to be done and done fast!

On July 30th, 2015, I was alerted that half the mural had been buffed(painted over) with brown paint.  My first thought was it was the city because brown paint is the mark of the city buff.  I went to check it out for myself because I was in disbelief.  Indeed, it was half gone over.  I went in to the store below the building to talk to the owner just to get the run around.  His biggest reason was the building needed renovations.  I sort of understood that, but still, I still saw no reason to paint over half the mural.  I asked him what the plan is once the said renovations were done and got no solid answer.  He then asked me "How long did you expect it to stay up?  It's been up for over a year. Thats a pretty good run.  You guys got a lot of media attention of it so that's good, right?".  I was shocked. We never asked for any of that.  We didn't do it for that.  And the justification that the wall had been up over a year really got to me.  Like it was some consolation prize.  We were under the impression it would not be touched.

With that said, we are currently looking for a new home(wall) for the mural.  We have a few things in the works and it won't be long until we find a permanent location.  We definitely need help being funded to do this as it can be expensive.  We need  paint and other supply's to do this.  Spray paint can be pretty expensive.   So we are asking for your help to give back and honor a man who gave so much!

I just want to thank all for your contributions and mostly your patience. With that said and with the help of the Frankie Knuckles Foundation, the mural will be going back up this weekend(August 17th, 2018), at its new home. It was a long process but we got it done and can focus on the fun part!

Where we stand:

We have a meeting next week Wednesday the 12th with the Miles Of Murals group of Rogers Park to discuss moving the wall there. I also scouted some walls this week around the site of "The Warehouse" in the West Loop. There are a few prospects in that area.

We also got a little right up on the Tribune Website, discussing the relocation. Hopefully that gives us a push here with the go fund me. I will post the link below.

Lastly, tomorrow night(Saturday), I will be on WGN radio with Dave Hoekstra to talk more about the mural. That will be around 10:35. Again, hoping to get more push for this Go Fund Me. I would say everything is going in the right direction. Thank you for the continued support!

We've been offered a couple walls. We are are also scouting other possible locations. Every offer is completely appreciated. We want to put this thing in the proper location, for everybody, without ever having to worrying about it being touched. Until we find this location, we will continue to search.

We are almost half way to our goal of $2,000.

Let's keep pushing!
