Frankie Knuckles Tribute Mural
On July 30th, 2015, I was alerted that half the mural had been buffed(painted over) with brown paint. My first thought was it was the city because brown paint is the mark of the city buff. I went to check it out for myself because I was in disbelief. Indeed, it was half gone over. I went in to the store below the building to talk to the owner just to get the run around. His biggest reason was the building needed renovations. I sort of understood that, but still, I still saw no reason to paint over half the mural. I asked him what the plan is once the said renovations were done and got no solid answer. He then asked me "How long did you expect it to stay up? It's been up for over a year. Thats a pretty good run. You guys got a lot of media attention of it so that's good, right?". I was shocked. We never asked for any of that. We didn't do it for that. And the justification that the wall had been up over a year really got to me. Like it was some consolation prize. We were under the impression it would not be touched.
With that said, we are currently looking for a new home(wall) for the mural. We have a few things in the works and it won't be long until we find a permanent location. We definitely need help being funded to do this as it can be expensive. We need paint and other supply's to do this. Spray paint can be pretty expensive. So we are asking for your help to give back and honor a man who gave so much!
We have a meeting next week Wednesday the 12th with the Miles Of Murals group of Rogers Park to discuss moving the wall there. I also scouted some walls this week around the site of "The Warehouse" in the West Loop. There are a few prospects in that area.
We also got a little right up on the Tribune Website, discussing the relocation. Hopefully that gives us a push here with the go fund me. I will post the link below.
Lastly, tomorrow night(Saturday), I will be on WGN radio with Dave Hoekstra to talk more about the mural. That will be around 10:35. Again, hoping to get more push for this Go Fund Me. I would say everything is going in the right direction. Thank you for the continued support!
We are almost half way to our goal of $2,000.
Let's keep pushing!
where is it going up this weekend ??
This project needs to get approval from the City of Chicago vua the Mayor. This way he can he honor in the cortect way. Iy was slways a pleasure when he was playing when I was bartending back in the day. You knew it was going yo be a great night.
