About FemEng in Rwanda

FemEng in Rwanda is a pioneering student project led by the University of Glasgow Female Engineers in collaboration with the University of Rwanda, working to encourage and educate more young people towards STEM fields.

Founded in 2016 by Ellen Simmons, the project is now in its 4th and final year, having already visited Rwanda for 3 successful trips. A team of 8 Glasgow University female engineers travel to Rwanda to work with a group of 8 young women studying STEM subjects at the University of Rwanda. The main aim of the project is to provide outreach workshops, exhibitions and talks to young people in Rwanda, giving them the opportunity to see what a career in a STEM subject might entail and encourage more young people into further education. CV building workshops are run by the Glasgow team to help support the Rwanda girls, as well as organised site visits to leading and innovate Engineering companies based in Rwanda. Over the course of three years the project has reached 25 schools and over 3000 children.

The work of FemEng in Rwanda has been recognised within the Scottish Parliament, in national newspapers and within the University itself. Both previous project managers, Ellen Simmons and Paula Pappas were awarded the prestigious Glasgow University Engineer Society Medal at graduation. The impact left by the team has increased applications to STEM subjects at the University of Rwanda by over 100% after the first year of the project alone, as more children were given the opportunity to learn about further education.
