Fort Severn to Toronto - Let's Go!
Donation protected
Greetings! I am Johanna Atamaniuk, teacher of the grade 7/8 class at Wasaho First Nation School in Ontario's most northern community of Fort Severn. We are a small community of around 350 people, 17 of which are my students! This year we are hoping to do something big for the grade 7/8 class to not only reward them for all of their hard work as they prepare for high school, but also to teach them about the many different gifts Canada has to offer. It is our hope to get enough funding to take my class and a few chaperones to Toronto so they can see all that the most culturally diverse city in Ontario has to offer!
[Construction of a new school is underway. The school has been set in 4 portables since the old school was torn down due to mould contamination just over 10 years ago. My students have never learned in an actual school setting - one reason for why learning from the world around them is so much more meaningful.]
Donations will be used to fund our trip - lodging, meals, admission to museums and cultural establishments, and extra miscellaneous expenses. Many of the students will bring their own pocket money in order to buy things that are otherwise unattainable in the remote town of Fort Severn. Only 2 of my students have ever been to Toronto before, and some have never even left the reserve in their lives. It will be an incredible experience for these students to engage in the world on a larger scale.
The trip will be on June 7th of this year, leaving only 5 more months for fundraising as of the beginning of this campaign. We currently have earned ~$15.000 -- enough to cover flights as the community is a fly-in and the plane tickets are very expensive. We achieved this through several community events, such as bake sales, large-pot bingo nights, penny sales, and radio bingos. We will continue our community fundraising, but any contribution you can make as an individual could really inspire and change a student's life. If you can't donate yourself, please share this page to bring it more attention. It will really mean a lot to my students to receive any amount of support!
Donators will receive a personal letter of thanks written and signed by my students. Simply provide your mailing address in a private message. Thank you notes can also sent through GoFundMe if you would prefer not to share your address.
