Mario Reyes, a native artisan here in Jalisco, Mexico in his mid-fifties, has been a good friend for many years, to me and my wife and many in the ex-pat community. His good nature, sense of humor, and great skill in designing and creating beautiful jewelry with obsidian, turquoise, jade, hematite, and otherminerals make him a stand out in the community. He has also helped improve the lives of many older people, Americans and Mexicans alike, with his healing and pain relieving skills.
Every week he has been with his wife and daughter on the Plaza in Ajijic selling necklaces and other artifacts he creates along with garments and handbags the women make.
Cancer suddenly struck Mario down a few months ago and he had a part of his colon removed in a government hospital (without general anaesthesia). He has no insurance or assets to cover the lifesaving therapies he needs. His friends are helping as much as we can, but Chemo and Radiation treatments cost $11,700 pesos every two weeks, which is about $700 dollars U.S.
He will probably die if he does not get these treatments, and it is urgent that money be raised as quickly as possible.
We are hoping to raise $5,000 dollars or more to help keep a good guy alive. His wife, children, and grandchildren all love him very much and are praying that this wonderful ufundme site will help provide the funding he lacks.
I am Mitchell Perey, an American who came to this community seven years ago (while retaining my U.S. residency in Texas) and have enjoyed Mario's welcoming friendship and assistance in understanding and participating in the local way of life. Unfortunately, I, like so many other Americans, am surviving here due to the very low cost of living. We just do not have surpluses that would allow us to do what I am asking you, the readers, to do - Provide enough money to help our dear friend survive.
If we are successful it will be a blessing of value beyond words. If any potential donors would like to come here personally, I will pick you up at the Guadalajara airport and take you directly to see him. Saturday and Sunday mornings are best, as he can spend an hour or two in the Plaza now and would be very happy to meet any new friends who contact us.
