#ShelbyStrong, round 2.
On behalf of Shelby Hilton, a group of her friends wrote this to raise awareness and help her fight cancer for the second time.
On February, 27 2014, Shelby was hit with the blow of brain cancer at the age of 21—medulloblastoma, a cancer rare to females, and especially rare to that age range. The news of cancer came while she was a competitive gymnast at University of Kentucky during a tumbling routine. Something didn’t seem right that day… even the weeks leading up to that meet, she recounts. During that tumbling routine broadcast for the world to see, she took a bad fall on her neck. She was then taken to the hospital, where scans showed Shelby that the coming months would take her away from college classes and competitive gymnastics to the hospital for the fight of her life.
When I heard her story for the first time, I remember holding back tears, wondering how a person could be so positive about such a tough situation from their past. But one of the things I love most about Shelby is her ability to see the good in every situation. She says that she wasn’t always this way… that through her battle with cancer, God taught her to see what’s most important in life. It allowed her to see the world through a different lens. It was tough at first to lose her eyelashes and hair… but, throughout the process she found a deeper connection with what’s most important in this life—cherishing the people and experiences more than ever. Her bout with cancer helped her grow as an individual. I find that incredibly beautiful.
After months of chemo and radiation, on September 29, 2015, Shelby, and her parents Donna and Hank, received the news that the treatments had worked and she was now in remission. Shelby worked to get back on track. She returned to the University of Kentucky where she finished her degree then returned to her hometown of St. Petersburg, Florida.
Since moving back to St. Pete, Shelby began her new job and lives a very full life. Her friends refer to her as the “Yes, Girl.” If you want to go to a concert… Shelby will be there. If you want to go on a roadtrip… Shelby will be there. She lives as though every day is her last, something we could all strive for. Knowing Shelby Hilton has made so many of us better.
On May 22, 2018, just days before her 25th birthday... and over two-and-a-half years in remission, a routine scan showed an abnormality in her brain. Her oncologist confirmed on the 24th that the cancer was back. Shelby will be fighting cancer for a second time and needs all of the prayers and support she can get. Any kind words and/or donations to Shelby’s second fight against cancer will be so greatly appreciated. All donations will go direction to medical expenses and travel expenses (to and from doctors appointments). In the coming weeks we will keep you updated on Shelby’s progress.
