Help the Robo Squad compete in St. Louis!

The Elm City Robo Squad, FIRST robotics team 558 in urban New Haven, CT, has high hopes of qualifying for the third year in a row to attend the FIRST World Championship in St. Louis on April  28-30, 2016.

Why do we need help?

As an inner-city team, our travel costs are entirely supported by fundraising. Even with choosing the most frugal options for transportation and housing (like sharing an 18-hour bus ride with other teams), these costs add up quickly. Competing at the championship level also incurs additional expenses like registration fees, extra robot parts, trailer rental and robot shipping.

What is FIRST?

FIRST is a program started by Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway scooter, that combines the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and math with the thrill of competition. Each year, thousands of high school students have six weeks in which to design and build their robots. This year's game, Stronghold, requires robots, working in teams of three, to defend their castles and at the same time capture their opponents' towers by shooting "bolders." You can learn more about FIRST at www.firstinspires.org  and about the Robo Squad at www.facebook.com/robosquad558 and www.elmcityrobosquad.org .

For 2016, Elm City Robo Squad built a robot nicknamed “Brick” to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition game Stronghold which is a capture the castle themed game complete with castle defenses including a moat, a rock wall and a drawbridge. The robot carries boulders (balls) across the defenses or obstacles and shoots them into goals in the castle at the end of the playing field. Come see Brick in action on April 14th, 15th and 16th at the XL Center in Hartford @ the FIRST New England Championship. The event is open to the public and admission is free.

Elm City Robo Squad competed in the FIRST Robotics Competition Hartford District Event on Saturday, April 2nd, and Sunday, April 3rd, 2016, at Hartford Public High School. We also competed in the FIRST Robotics Competition Waterbury District Event on Saturday, March 6th, and Sunday, March 7th, 2016 at Wilby High School. The events were sponsored by United Technologies and Comcast NBCUniversal. After winning both events, we qualified for the FIRST Robotics Competition New England Championship at the XL Center in Hartford on April 14th – 17th and we are ranked 1st in New England in a field of 181 teams from the region. At the FIRST Waterbury District Event we took home the Quality Award, which celebrates machine robustness in concept and fabrication. And at the FIRST Hartford District Event we took home the Chairman’s Award which is the most prestigious award at FIRST, it honors us for best representing a model for other teams to emulate and for best embodying the purpose and goals of FIRST. We are looking forward to competing in the New England Championship and are optimistic that we will qualify for the FIRST World Championship on April 27th-30th. Thank you to all of our donors, sponsors, mentors and supporters!
