Dorothy Steele: Final Resting Place

Donation protected
Dorothy Steele, a long time resident of Cambridge MA, died last week at age 77. She died from severe injuries sustained from the hit and run accident that threw her from her wheelchair onto Columbia street very early in the morning on 2/28/16. Dorothy's accident made both local and national news.

Dorothy's 81 year old brother Allen, is her only living relative. He needs help to cover the costs of cremation and cemetery fees so that his dear sister can have her final resting place beside their parents, who were also from Cambridge.

Dorothy was an immensly kind soul. She spent her mornings wheeling around the neighborhood feeding the birds and squirrels, and then made her way up to the hospital where she ate breakfast in the cafeteria daily. Her friend Kay tells me everyone there knew her well. Dorothy  was a feirce animal lover. She carried animal magazines in a plastic bag attached to her wheelchair which she sometimes gave to my daughter. She kept a shelf of glass animal figurines in the window of her tiny one room apartment in the senior housing complex where she lived. Everyone who spoke with her marveled at her kindness, positivity and gentle spirit.

Dorothy Steele was a  true Cantabridgian. She lived on Harvard Street when she was born, and later on Amory Street. Her brother attended what is now the Cambridgeport School in the 40's, while she went to the Longfellow. She graduated from CRLS in 1956 when it was called Cambridge High & Latin.  This city was her home.

In the spirit of community I am asking for donations of ANY size to help get Dorothy to her final resting place. Do it in the name of the marginalized, in the name of Cambridge, in the spirit of helping the poor. Do it if you have a soft spot for animal lovers, for bird lovers or for unconventional " Mary Poppins" like old ladies who live by their own rules.

I was enriched by knowing her. Your donations will help relieve a terrible financial burden on her elderly brother and will simply mean the world to me.

I thank you with all my heart.
