Advanced Choirs to NYC

Donation protected
The Choral Department at Licking Heights High School is a thriving, close-knit family of students ever striving to improve our own abilities as musicians while enriching our school and community. Over the last three years, increased demand has led to the creation of two new choirs  - Advanced Women’s Chorus and the Deep Treble A Cappella Choir - and our Advanced Mixed Choir has almost doubled in size from 18 students to 35. Each ensemble is composed of students who participate in activities from across the spectrum. Our choir room is a place where the star of the football team, the President of National Honor Society, the Captain of the Quiz Bowl Team, the Field Commander of the Marching Band, and more can all come together as members of one school, one choir, and one family.

In the last two years, the Advanced Choirs have consistently received Superior ratings at OMEA Adjudicated Events, both at the district and state levels. Our hard work has paid off, and this year, our Advanced Women’s and Advanced Mixed Choirs have been extended an exceptional opportunity: The chance to work with distinguished director Dr. Dennis Malfatti in New York City, culminating in a performance in world-renowned Carnegie Hall. Dr. Malfatti is the Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at the University of Evansville in Indiana, and his accomplishments in the world of vocal music are extensive.

Our visit to New York City will also consist of other unique experiences. These include a concert by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, a performance of Broadway shows Aladdin and Something Rotten!, and the chance to reflect at the National September 11th Memorial and Museum. This opportunity is more than a field trip to us - it is a chance to grow as human beings by deepening our knowledge of the world and its many cultures; to learn about the realm of professional music in preparation for some of our future careers; to develop our independence, improve our cooperation, and to gain a greater respect and appreciation for our fellow choir members and director.

The trip, which will take place June 2-6 of this year, will cost each student approximately $1800. Over the last two years, our choir members have worked diligently to plan and execute numerous fundraisers in order to offset the cost of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. However, many students are paying for their trip without any assistance from their families, and at least 22 of our 44 members will be unable to participate unless more funds can be raised. It is for this reason that we come before you today. It is our hope that you will assist us in reaching our goal of raising $40,000 - enough to pay for half the cost of each student’s trip. Our request is also quite urgent: we must notify our travel company by April 15th how many students will be traveling, and the final payments for the trip are due at this time as well.

The Licking Heights Choral Department is marked by a rich history and a vibrant present. Will you help to make our future even brighter?
