Help Fly Adam Home

Donation protected
Hi! So, my dad Adam Coard was hospitalised earlier this year in October while on holiday with my mum for their 25th wedding anniversary. He was so excited to make this special for her so he flew the two of them to Perth and had the whole week planned out for them. We live in Brisbane so it was quite a trip for them, especially to take alone as my older brother and I were staying home, one of the first solo trips they'd taken together in a very long time.

On the 11th he got hospitalised for cellulitis in his leg (an issue he'd had before, but only usually put him in the hospital for a couple days). He was also told he had two bacterial infections in his body, which was unusual, but something they could treat with antibiotics.

During this treatment he developed a rash that started on his chest but eventually spread over most of his body (they think it was an allergic reaction to one of the pills he was on).

While this was going on, he felt very weak, he couldn't walk and was constantly exhausted. My mother had to leave after a week because she needed to go back to work because we needed the money to pay for bills.

On the 26th of October he was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome. A rare nerve condition where the immune system attacks the nerves. The treatment was a five day treatment but on the 26th they had to induce my father into a coma to stop his lungs from collapsing (which is fairly common in people suffering from Guillain-Barré syndrome, from what I've heard).

Five days later when they took him off the drugs inducing him, he woke up pretty much completely paralysed. He could move one finger and that was all. He had a trachea in his throat and was being fed through his nose with tubes. Through extensive physical therapy he's improved quite quickly. His trachea was removed on the 12th of November and began eating pureed food around this time. As of the 20th of November he's sat up by himself once, is breathing by himself, can move his hands (though, they're swollen) and can partly speak. Often having to use a chart to point out letters to help him speak. He's also lost a lot of weight during this period.

So, why do we need $65,000? Basically, the hospital has decided they'd rather keep him in Perth than pay to fly him home. We cannot afford to bring him back on our own and think that leaving him there by himself while he heals up won't help anyone, including him. My brother and mother have both visited him while he's been there which costs over a thousand dollars each way, not including accommodation. Flying him back would mean he could be treated in the Brisbane hospital and I, who will become his primary carer once he's out of the hospital, can spend a lot of time with him during the healing process and keep him company at the hospital while my mum and brother work.

Guillain-Barré syndrome can take well over two years to even get back to 80% functionality, sometimes taking around twelve years before the person is fully healed. This is going to be a very, very long road for all of us, my dad especially. Being closer to home would make this road a lot less bumpy or we may have to wait months to bring him home and spend more and more money to go visit him over in WA. Please donate if you can and share either way.
