First disabled female to sail single-handed around the World Departing Cardiff November 2019

Hi, my name is Jasmine Palmer a 49-year-old disabled female living in South Wales.

I'm going to set sail in October 2019 from Cardiff to take advantage of the weather and trade winds on a global campaign as the first disabled female to make a solo circumnavigation of the world. I will be highlighting the struggle that disabled people have on a daily bases and be campaigning against plastics being dumped into the world’s oceans.

Help to make a difference

I will have to endure the ravages of the Atlantic, Pacific and the Southern oceans, wild storms, blistering heat and cold and wet conditions.  Solitude, sometimes in the order of 30 plus days alone at sea with no one to talk to or depend on. Without any support, totally reliant on my own inner strength, determination, and drive.  This is a massive undertaking for an able-bodied person far more so for a solo disabled female. I am passionate about disabled rights and the abilities of disabled people and the plastic entering our oceans and I want to inspire others to change the way people think. I want to inspire people, in particular, young people to strive to reach their goals and ambitions, whilst being a force for change.

The funds raised will be spent on the costs of supporting myself and the boat as it sails around the world on a 16-month voyage covering over 40 thousand miles. It will help to make the necessary adaptations that are needed to enable me to sail the boat. Providing back up and support that I will need as I arrive and depart ports, berthing and casting off the dock, dealing with local port officials and to re-provision, repair and fuel the boat. The funds will help me to travel to different locations to campaign and promote the causes I am so passionate about at local and government level and with local businesses. I'm very keen to work with schools, universities and local charities en route to promote this campaign. Whilst I'm sailing I will be constantly collecting data, photographic, video and audio evidence for the use by universities, schools, and marine conservation groups so that it can be used to better advise on what is happening to the oceans and what needs to be done.

I'm a wheelchair user with limited walking ability due to spinal and leg injuries. In 2014 I then spent a whole year living on my sitting room floor culminating in spinal surgery. Subsequently, I have been diagnosed with a degenerative spinel disorder. A few years ago, my leg was crushed on a rail track and this left me with chronic lymphedema and constant pain. I have undergone 2 partial amputations on my hands due to Dupuytren’s contracture that is prevalent in both my hands and feet. Load bearing on my feet and walking is like walking on broken glass for me.

I have been through more than 20 other operations and procedures. I also suffer from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), mental health problems, depression, anxiety and PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) as a result of my leg injury. I'm on a plethora of prescribed medication including morphine to control chronic pain. These are just a few of my past and present health issues.

Every day is a constant battle for me.

I left school aged 16 with no formal qualifications but became a marine engineer and have worked most of my younger life on anything from small fishing boats and tugs through to superyachts. Sailing has always been a passion of mine whether it’s been making deliveries of sailing yachts or racing in the Solent on one design yachts. In my late 20s, I settled in the Midlands and was involved within the construction industry. I subsequently set up home in the beautiful Welsh valleys where I ran an engineering company until due to poor health and a leg crushing injury I was forced to retire.

Despite all my past and ongoing problems, I take an active role in my community supporting many and various groups and events.

In the past I have been a keen fundraiser for other charities and causes during which time I have jumped out of helicopters to rescue a teddy bear, diving in full scuba diving equipment to the bottom of a marina to recover a toy bear which was accidentally dropped overboard by PUDSY before returning it back to Pudsy Bear of the “BBC Children in Need” charity. In more recent years I have donated the materials and built a two-storey extension to a home in 24 hours for a gentleman who was terminally ill with cancer, for the BBC program “DIY SOS”.

Your donations for this campaign will facilitate me to be able to put together this unique and historic event by solo circumnavigating the globe calling at 26 strategic ports around the world to raise awareness and the profile of disabled people and to help change the attitude towards plastics entering our oceans.

This campaign will attract global news and media attention and with your support will help to change minds and inform attitudes towards disabled people and the environment.

You can help make a difference.

Please help by making a donation of any amount to this campaign.

If you are unable to donate, then please do share this page and follow my progress on social media.

I'm also actively pursuing corporate sponsorship and would heartily welcome any corporate contact.

A huge “Thank You” for your support, now let’s cast off and set sails together.
