Futscher Family Fund

$124,075 of $250,000 goal

Raised by 884 people in 16 months
The Futscher Family lost their home on Mountain View Dr. in San Rafael, CA on Tuesday, February 7,  just after 8am to a mud slide. They got out safely, but with only the clothes on their backs. They have nothing. No phones, keys, wallets, computers, personal belongings- nothing. The house is literally a pile of rubble. Their car was partially buried as well.

Insurance will cover surprisingly little of this loss, as "earth movement" is a standard exclusion in CA homeowners policies. The costs associated with clean-up, under pinning, site preperation, retaining walls, home construction and furnishing will be astronomical.

We are reaching out to our community for support. If you have the means, please donate any amount you can.

Other ways to help include providing meals for the family via mealtrain (link below) and donating gift cards (Clothing stores, Target , Restaurant, Grocery Stores, Gas Stations , Amex or Visa).

Thank you in advance for your generosity and support!

Mr. Futscher- I'm so sorry for your loss. I probably can sympathize with your pain as well as anyone. I suffered a catastrophic landslide on Wood Lane in Fairfax in 2006 that completely destroyed my home. I may be able to offer some helpful advice/insight into what may lie ahead. Insurance, clean up, mitigation efforts, analysis, etc. I can provide references that may help with whatever course you choose. If you'd care to speak, please don't hesitate to call. I need to respond to comment below from Nancy Edmondson; I can state from personal experience that Go Fund Me takes a small part of the donations--and the service they provide is unparalleled--and the income is considered a personal gift by the IRS--the donations can't be claimed as a charitable tax deduction by the donor, but the income is considered a gift the recipient received and is not taxable. I am happy and confident donating to this cause and send my best wishes to the Futscher family during this difficult time.

I hear that Go Fund Me takes a large part of the donations. Also the remaining amount is considered income by the IRS so the donations aren't tax exempt as they would be if they were gifts. The family might want to check this all out so their donations don't just melt away. Pro bono legal advice or CPA advice (or both) would be a great donation here, IMO
