What is Destination Imagination, or DI?
DI is a project-based learning program, supported here in Westford by the PTO. Every year, small teams of students choose to solve one of seven new academic challenges that focus on STEM, the arts, and service learning. These challenges are open-ended and enable each child to experience the creative process from imagination to innovation. By the time these teams present their solution to their challenge, they’ve learned the skills needed to thrive in school, their careers, and beyond – and they’ve had a lot of fun.
Why recognize this team of middle schoolers?
The team 6 DI Dolphins consists of 6 middle and elementary school students aged 10 to 13. This team was one of twenty Westford teams who participated in our Regional tournament, and they advanced to be one of two Westford teams who competed at the Massachusetts statewide level. A total of 140 teams participated from 10 regions at the state level, out of which 7 teams were in the middle school level Engineering challenge. By winning first place at States for the Engineering challenge, they're now invited to participate in the Global Finals—the world’s largest celebration of student creativity. They'll present along with the top-scoring DI teams from 45 U.S. states and 15+ countries. Around 8,000 students and 17,000 attendees are expected to participate in this event. This is the first team from Westford in the last several years to reach DI Global Finals.
The team needs to travel to the DI tournament in Knoxville, Tennessee. We request your support to help the team raise funds to cover the expenses needed to participate in DI Global Finals.
