Hey y'all, I'm making another studio album, titled Burning Sage. Some of the new ones are still in the creative process, but others, like "Lying To Myself" and "Tucumcari Tonight', have already crept into the live rotation. This will be a collaborative effort, as I'm once again teaming up with my frequent co-writer, Joe Armitage, and Jeff Watkins (James Brown, Joss Stone, New Orleans Suspects) is back on board to help produce and mix. I'll also feature some as-of-yet unnamed, special guests from the New Orleans music community.

My plan is to have this out by late March/early April 2019 and I'll keep y'all posted on the progress with videos of the sessions and songwriting process. But the biggest and most personal collaboration will be with my son, Miles. He’s a photographer and this will be the first time we work on a project together!

I've always been humbled by the generosity of my friends and fans and I've set up a multi-tiered level of rewards to show my appreciation for your contributions. As an independent artist, there is no way to overstate how much y'all are integral to this whole process and I really couldn't do it without you. I love making music for y'all and am so grateful for your support and can't wait to share the next step in the journey with you.

Good morning music lovers! I’ve recently returned from a 10 day tour through south FL and the FL Keys and wanted to give an update on the record. We go into the studio next Monday, January 28, to start the first round of sessions for the album. We had a nice pre production session yesterday, where I introduced Alex and Will to the title track. Here’s a little YouTube video of our progress:

https://youtu.be/KLtrjeBGM94

The first round of sessions will be focused on the above title track, “Burning Sage”; two new songs that have been in the live rotation for a bit now, “Lying To Myself” and “Tucumcari Tonight”; two songs from previous album sessions that we will either re-track or use existing tracks to update or edit them- Neil Young’s “Out On The Weekend” and an older song of mine called “Like You”. There are also 2 songs I’ve been kicking around for the last couple years but they’ve never been recorded or played live- a happy kinda Motown meets Jerry Garcia styled number called “Bird On The Wire”, and another in my long line of devastating heartbreak songs called “What If”, which has a little Van Morrison meets Tedeschi Trucks feel. Coincidentally, I’ll be playing Jazz Fest the same day as Van. Pretty psyched about that.

Once we get rolling, prepare yourself for lots of updates and new content!

Hey everybody! One month in and we’re over $5000! Thank you all so much for your generous support. It is so appreciated, there’s no way for me to adequately express it.

2019 is shaping up to be a very good year. This business is full of ups and downs and nothing is really predictable, much like life. I try to measure the down years with the idea of just staying the course. Don’t let the pendulum swing too far in either direction and work the plan. So after a couple of kinda lean years, it’s nice to feel like it’s swinging back. I’m also too stupid to stop! :)

Big announcements about some tour dates are coming next week and I’ll also hopefully be able to share some info on the recording sessions at that time as well. I’ve reached out to some of my more well known friends and schedule permitting, this record will have some very special guests!

In solid news, the first rounds of recording sessions will be Jan. 28-31, which happens to overlap with my birthday! It’s a nice present to myself, via y’all! Can’t wait to share some videos with you!

All The Best, Dave

Hey everybody!! I hope all of y’all had a wonderful holiday and are as excited about the New Year as I am. Thank you so much for all the support thus far.

We are currently working out the demos of some brand new stuff and I’m trying to align schedules to start hitting the studio. I’m planning on doing these sessions in various sections of 2-3 days at a time.

Unlike a lot of the records I’ve made, I decided on the album title, Burning Sage, fairly early in this process and I’ve got a fairly clear vision of what type of album I want to make and some of the imagery involved.

One of the most personal and wonderful things about this project is collaborating for the first time with my son, Miles. He has chosen to study photography and starts this semester as the photo editor for the newspaper at University of Louisiana- Monroe. We got together last night to start mapping out ideas and I am excited to share a couple outtakes with you. I hope you enjoy!!

What a great first day!!! Thank you all so much for contributing. I’ll be honest: It’s not easy for me to start one of these campaigns. My “inner circle”, so to speak, knows I’ve been stewing over this for months and as the days grew closer to the point of no return for me to get this record made by my target date, I’ve been stressed. It’s not particularly easy to ask people to invest their hard earned money and I just want to express my utmost gratitude to everyone for helping me get this campaign rolling. I feel good about what we are all going to create and achieve.
A good friend and longtime supporter has for years encouraged me to open up about my life in music. My realities. And at 25 years into this, I guess I have some insights and some processes, some of which I wasn’t necessarily aware of. They just are. And since I’ve been asked many times about my songwriting process, I’m going to share a lot of the behind the scenes stuff throughout this campaign. So I’ll begin here.
A basic pattern that has emerged over the last 15 years or so is this: I come up with an idea, I mess with it a little and then I get together with my best friend of 30 years, Joe Armitage. This works because of trust. Joe understands me. I understand him. And since we have the same musical library in our minds, due to 30 years of friendship, it’s very easy for us to bounce ideas off each other. That kind of musical trust is surprisingly much more difficult to come by then it seems. I have it with Anders too, although we haven’t collaborated in nearly a decade. In both cases, no idea is off limits, but ideas can also be rejected without insult. It’s egoless, the respect of the creative process, what the song is telling you to do and what the writer is trying to convey.
So with that in mind, here is a video shot on Tuesday night. This is the first draft of what will be the title track, Burning Sage. It’s completely stripped down. Just two guys working and thinking about rhythm, melody and vibe. I’m not married to all these lyrics yet, and no doubt we will tweak more ideas before we decide what instrumentation is used on the final product.
Thanks for letting me let you in. Hope you dig it.
