Help Me Assemble This!

Many of you know me well - I'm a multidisciplinary artist trained in dance, voice, writing and philosophy (as well as assorted body-tech and drama practices, and even - ha - basic small-business management). I've danced with the Australian Ballet, written for The Australian and Dance Australia, had an excerpt of my novel-in-progress published in Hecate (peer-reviewed Australian literary journal), and performed my own avant-cabaret shows in popular underground dives in Brisbane, Sydney and Berlin. In 2001 I took up life modelling, a synergistic practice that, besides paying the rent, has also informed and augmented my other fields of creative inquiry and developed my interest in the fine arts. In recent years as I did less performance I began to work mostly with clay, often under the mentorship of some of Sydney's most distinguished sculptors, but in the search for a way to resolve my diverse passions and skills into a coherent practice I turned to assemblage - more about which below. I'm a performer to my bones and will likely include performance in every exhibition, but I'm now producing objects that can be purchased.

Notwithstanding the satisfactions of the above paragraph, I struggle to make a living. Really struggle. This is the reality of being an independent artist in 21st-century Australia, and perhaps most times and places. Of course, put the range of my interests, abilities and practices together with my lamentable lack of business and administrative skills and it's not hard to see why I'm spread far too thin - if I had the strategic skills to support a team of paid assistants I'd be a powerhouse multi-arts producer.

In November, I'll have my first exhibition of sculpture, performance and assemblage works, Assemble This, in the street windows of Redfern arts hub 107. Two large windows, one whole month - including an opening, a members' and contributors' night, and a closing night party. A rotating feast of eclectic assemblage pieces, from the in-your-face politics of White Privilege to the lush, feminist sensuality of Libida (pictured above) to the pure lyric form of Fireflier. Not to mention Act of Faith, Cosmic Attitude, Brexit, Sum of All Things and others, if I get them finished. My studio is bursting with works which are held up by either lack of funds for parts or lack of time for non-paying work. That's where you can help.

I need money to make this exhibition happen. You can contribute either to the general fund or to a specific project, according to your interest. Just specify which if any particular piece you'd like to support in production.

Of course I’ve invested a lot of my own money in this project already - thousands of dollars’ worth of materials and technical assistance over several years - as well as countless hours of research, experiment and creation. I’ve worked thus far without grants or other financial support, and to be honest, my rego is due on the car I can’t afford to repair, I owe rates on the little country house that won’t seem to sell, I scramble to settle utility bills and sometimes the Redfern rent doesn’t get paid on time. By the end of this year I hope to be selling work, taking commissions and launching a Patreon page, but in the meantime this short-term option is a way for me to gauge the level of support I might hope for. If you think (as some of my friends are kind enough to tell me) I’m awesome and absolutely worth investing in, or if you at least think I deserve a break, or if you just want in on what I’m doing here, even the smallest contribution will be gratefully received and royally appreciated.

Please share this campaign to any of your friends whom you think might like me or my work.

These are my major exhibition expenses between now and November (total approx $5000):

Bronze casting (including complex two-stage mould-making process)
Fireflyer...............$1250
Libida....................$1630

Staff and Admin
$100/week to pay a university student for part-time media management till end Nov.............$1000
Printing of posters, flyers, postcards and banners, as well as labels and artist statements.............................$200

Materials and Research
Frame for Sum of All Things.......................................$250
Frame for Shorelineages #5...............................................$100
Miniature perspex staircase for White Privilege...................................$?? (awaiting quote)
Bathroom furniture and other supplies for White Privilege.............$100
Globe and adaptation for Cosmic Attitude.................................$120
A week’s study and experimentation with resin (particularly “frozen moment” processes) culminating in the creation of Brexit (disrupted tea service)...................................$300

Sundries and Champers
The expenses for holding and promoting an exhibition are considerable: any excess over the stated goal will go directly to some other aspect of the project. If it all works out perfectly there'll be enough for extra champagne at the parties.
