Help 92 y.o. Ms. Lela

$10,305 of $10,000 goal

Raised by 296 people in 14 months
I’m a community activist and concerned neighbor in Richmond, ca. I have lived in Richmond for over 20 years. I am working with her along with others from the City of Richmond and Contra Costa County. Ms. Lela Madison is now homeless after living in her home for 54 years. She has been taken advantage of due to her age. She is now locked out of her home with no where to go. Can we help her with legal fees, first, last and deposit? I plan to take a check to her once SHE decides how best she wants to use it (legal assistance, permanent housing). Thank you for your help!

Thank you all once again for helping miss Lela get back home. All of the funds that were donated has now vanished on legal fees. We just spent the last $5,000 on another appeal to keep her in her home. Please help. No amount is too small!

UPDATE:
As of today, Mrs. Madison is home settled in! Your donations have helped her with moving costs, and many other costs to ensure her comfort now that she’s back home. I have to say, I’m truly at a loss for words regarding the court costs for people. Fees and such are crazy high. How are struggling people supposed to make it? She has to pay, not only court fees, but also “rent.”

The fees, per her angel of an attorney, is to buy time. Until now, she had been getting bad advice from attorneys who have now disappeared from the scene.

From her attorney: (Richmond PD) is investigating this matter and will be able to release some documents to me in the next few days, so we will learn a little more.  People keep trying to get her to "sign documents" in order for them to "release money", but they hang up when she tells them to call me.   Once I get the documents from the Detective maybe we can sit down and put together a plan for digging her out of this situation.”

Thank you for helping us reach our initial goal. Any additional help is welcomed! Miss Lela is truly grateful!

Update on Ms. Madison:

Through community networking, we found an attorney who helped her win her appeal!!! The court case is Tuesday 8-14-18 (will share time as soon as I get it) to determine when she can get back into her her house!! I will invite people to attend to support Ms. Madison. We need people to show up en masse to show our support for this elder in our Richmond community. Please show up at the Richmond Superior Court on 37th street. 8:30 is a good guess, but stay tuned.

Assuming that the case is victorious, we will arrange for removal of her items from storage and a move in day with volunteers. We will support Ms. Madison in turning on the utilities.

Support through the PD will contact a local Pastor to see if there is a possibility to appeal her qualification for the low income home buying program.

We have a small group who will meet again in two weeks to update.

Another community supporter with real estate background, will meet with Ms. Madison to see if she will accept some legal help to manage her business dealings from a trusted source.

There is a criminal investigation with the DA’s office, RPD and other agencies. This will continue. Thanks RPD!

APS (Adult Protective Services) is now envolved as well. They will assign a new caseworker, because the current social worker assigned is retiring.

CORE’s role (Contra Costa County Homeless Program) will reduce once she gets back in her house.

The group agreed that the GoFundME funds will be held for Ms. Madison until she moves back in and her many needs are assessed (the best use of the funds. Such as: bills accumulated, storage fees, etc). We see many financial obligations that need to be met, and we are grateful to all the people who contributed to helping her! Look what we can do together. Thank you all!
