This is Michael Heaton’s GoFundMe Page.

Michael has been diagnosed with a Medullary Cancer that has now spread to his lungs. Sadly surgery and chemotherapy are not options. Radiation therapy is on the table and expenses are expected to start to pile up as soon as that treatment begins. They are hoping to begin treatment in about 2 weeks.

Mike has a CaringBridge Page that can be found at www.caringbridge.org/visit/michaelheaton. Please visit this page often to see journal entries, updates and other ways that you can help.

Mike has an incredible number of friends and family that love him. If you can contribute to this GoFundMe page, he will be incredibly grateful. If you are unable to contribute money, please visit the CaringBridge page above for other ideas or simply send your love. Words of encouragement and friendship are incredibly valuable commodities.

Kristy said that she and Mike have been able to get out of the house a little lately. Last weekend they took a road trip up to Cottage Grove, WI to an apple orchard. (See picture of Mike with the gourds) Today, they made it to Kristy’s dads birthday party. Both trips have been a nice change of scenery.

Mike has been going on walks with a new neighbor who sadly is also battling cancer. Although the walks aren’t every day or all that long, he is getting fresh air and exercise. He was even feeling well enough to pick up his guitar.

They have an appointment this Wednesday at Rush Medical Center to get a CT. It should show them if the suppression drug is working. Happy cancer-suppression thoughts this week will be appreciated.

Mike is doing alright. He had a side effect from the cancer drug that caused severe acne. It almost looked like he had the measles. Kristy and Mike sent pictures to the doctor and she had him stop taking it for now and put him on Prednisone to help, which it has. They have an appointment Thursday to see her and a dermatologist in Elmhurst. They will have some answers then as to what they'll have him do next.

Mike is eating a lot better, which is great.

Keep the thoughts and good wishes coming!

Kristy said they are doing well. Some of the side effects of the Caprelsa are showing up now which are pretty unpleasant. Mike had an appointment Monday this week. They did an EKG and will do one at the next visit to keep checking his heart due to the possibility of side effects. They said his calcium, potassium and magnesium levels were all good. They did give him another infusion of the Zomeda to help strengthen his bones.
As far as the trial at University of Chicago goes, they found out he does have the genetic mutation they were looking for but right now they won't take him in the trial unless the Caprelsa does not work. So good and bad news there.

Kristy has been feeling a little overwhelmed but she said Mike has been so great. She said it sounds a little backwards, the "patient" calming the caregiver, but Mike said they are in this together.
They are looking forward to the benefit tomorrow. They are both so thankful for the huge outpouring of love and support.

Mike is home from the hospital and has been since Thursday, August 2nd. In the hospital they performed radiation therapy on his L5 (5th lumbar vertebrae) and Mike thinks it has helped alleviate his pain in the area a little bit. They have started him on cancer suppressant drugs, which are silly expensive, and he is still on pain relievers. He is still walking the fine line between pain relief and nausea. He and Kristy were hoping he could participate in a trial out of University of Chicago that has been showing promising results. He was not immediately entered into the trial but his doctors have not given up yet. They are trying to get him in based on test results from his first run-in with this nasty disease.

His sister, Teri, got Mike a bed rail which has allowed him to get in and out of bed a bit easier. He sleeps a couple hours in bed, then to the couch, and then the chair. He is still getting up and walking around the house every couple of hours to keep his strength up as much as possible. He is also trying hard to eat as much as he can to keep his strength up.

He is very much looking forward to the benefit concert on Saturday, September 1st. He really hopes to attend. Please share information about this event with all your friends and family:
