Barrett’s Heart Journey HLHS

Richelle and Rich have 3 children. Their youngest, Barrett was born with HLHS: Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, which means the left side of his heart is severely underdeveloped, and without surgery this is fatal.
At just 16 weeks gestation they found out there was an issue with his heart.
At 20 weeks gestation they diagnosed him with HLHS.
Kids born with HLHS will have 3 stages of surgery:
-Norwood (surgery normally done at 1 week)Barrett had this when he was 3 days old.
-Glen (surgery normally done at 4-6 months)Barrett had this when he was 3.5 months old.
-Fontan (surgery normally done at 3 years)
In addition to HLHS, Barrett has a weak heart muscle, and unfortunately there is no surgery to repair this.
Barrett was born on May 3rd, 2017 and was in the hospital and underwent two surgeries and a long recovery until he was discharged on September 12th, 2017.
On May 3rd, 2018 he turned 1!
But then on May 20th, 2018, Barrett showed signs of swelling and Rich & Richelle took him to the ER where he was transferred to STL Children’s Hospital where he was admitted and diagnosed with heart failure.
Currently Richelle is staying with Barrett day and night while he is in the hospital being monitored closely.
On May 30th, 2018 Barrett was placed on the transplant list!!!
Rich is working at the Veteran’s hospital in Columbia during the week while the kids, Kyleigh and Richard stay with family. Rich and the kids drive down to STL every weekend to be with Richelle & Barrett. Kyleigh (11) loves to read, listen to music, shop, fish and hunt.Richard (7) loves Pokémon, nerf guns, sports, being outside swimming, hunting and fishingBarrett (1) loves Mickey Mouse and anything with lights and sounds.
